Forerunner 965 screen lag/freeze after 22.22 software update

My Forerunner 965 just updated with the 22.22 software update and now the screen lags when I try to use it.

When I press the down button or long press something like the weather, the watch freezes, noticeable by the seconds indicator no longer incrementing and buttons no longer working, and it takes around 8 seconds before the widgets are displayed and the inputs catch up.

Afterwards navigating around works mostly as expected. Although sometimes trying to navigate back also freezes.

I've tried turning the watch off and back on again, resetting it, reinstalling the software update, and doing a full factory reset.

I had no issues before the update.

  • Another issue: If I try to set a passcode it locks up for a bit, then tells me there was an error.  The watch now thinks it has a passcode set, but nothing I enter will successfully let me past the passcode screen essentially locking me out of the device.  Factory reset will get me back into the watch, but the screen lag issue persists.  I tried to set a passcode again and the same issue occurred.

  • I’m having this exact issue verbatim. Everything was fine until just a few short weeks ago. Installed updated. Turned on off several times. Factory reset. Unpaired. Everything. Still lags several seconds between each screen.
I’ve read that it “needs to be cleaned” because it’s some sort of button issue. I can’t assure it’s not the button(s). They’re all snappy and have a snappy “click” to each. The problem is even evident when I swipe on the touch screen — you’ll see a lag, and after ~ 5 seconds the screen will move in the direction I swiped (indicating it’s not an issue with “sticky buttons”).

Would love to get a follow up from anyone — this watch used to be great but now it’s unusable.

    I have a Forerunner 955 from 2022.

  • OMG! The good old going away from the watch face bug is back!? This was happening on other devices as well. I can't believe it's not fixed yet by Garmin

  • Thank you for sharing, everyone. If you are experiencing this, please answer the following:

    1. How often does the lag/freeze occur?
    2. If possible, please capture the concerns on video so we can see examples. You can upload/submit the information here: Secure File Upload Tool
    3. If necessary, may we have permission to reach you via email?
  • I've uploaded a video to the recommended site. You can see it lock up when I press the button as the seconds stop counting and then the watch catches up and the menu opens.

It definitely happens when it first wakes up and I try to open any other screen. Pressing a button, long pressing something on the watch face (weather), or swiping on the screen to get to the widgets will all do it.  Sometimes it does it when I press the back button to get out of the widgets and go back to the watch face.

I suppose it could be related to the other passcode issue. Maybe it is trying to decide if it needs to ask me for a passcode, timing out, and then letting me through? Or it's unrelated and this update broke 2 things.

Some more fun information. The screen lag went away yesterday and I had no issues for the entire day.  I rebooted my watch just to test it after seeing your response and now it's back so I made the video.

Yes, you can contact me via email.

  • From what I use it for, I also notice the lag happens every time I receive a notification. Aside from that, Any time I go to check the glances, it lags for 1-10 seconds so far and it doesn't matter if it's button or touch. There is probably more to it that I haven't noticed yet. This happened after installing 22.22.

  • Strange... I dont have this problem in version 22.24 and I didnt in version 22.22.

But after every update I made I then made a "Reinstall Software"...
