how do I see topo maps

I have a new watch from ebay.  I've figured out how to look at a map (I think), as I see a red arrow, a blue arrow & a circle crosshairs.  But there are no topo lines or anything that shows map features.  I have not downloaded any maps as I thought the watch came with topo maps.  How do I see the actual map?

  • Use Garmin Express on a computer to install the maps for your area

  • I'll try that, but I read all maps are pre-loaded on this watch.  Is that not true?

Also, looking at Garmin Express, it says you can use it to upload your data to Garmin Connect.  But I thought it already did that.  Without using Garmin Express, I saw my data on my Garmin Connect app on my cell.

  • They should be, depends which watch, and which region you're in. You can sync your data via GC on phone or GE on a pc, same same. But I'd use GE for the maps as the wifi download will be so much faster than the watch's wifi. You can check and add/remove maps in the map manager on the watch but just use GE it's so much quicker

  • Thanks, that was quite helpful.  My watch only had the Indonesia & Singapore maps but I wanted North America so with your help, I'm working on that.  I installed GE on my PC but could not set it up since my (old) computer does not have a USB-C jack (sigh) & I don't have an adaptor (yet).  I've started the 10.9 GB download & will report how long it takes.  UPDATE:  it took a bit less than 14.5 hours.  It makes you plug the watch in before it downloads but luckily I have a power cube for that (USB-C to AC power), just don't have an adaptor with female USB-C to male USB-A.

Just so I know, the watch talks to the phone via bluetooth.  And the watch talks to my router via wifi.  Is that correct?  So when from the watch & tell it to download maps, it's using wifi to my router, is that correct?

The options to download maps are:  Garmin Express (run on PC, fastest) OR Map Manager on watch.  Can I download maps using Garmin Connect (on cell)?

    Thanks for all your help.

  • Yep, if you download maps in GE on your pc then GE will use your pc's wifi connection. North America is a huge download over the slow wifi of the watch so just hold out until your adapter arrives as it can fail and you'll have to download again.

  • I know when I use GE, it uses my PC's wifi connection to my router.  But when the watch is downloading maps (started on watch), is it also using the wifi to my router (tho slower)?  I've already started the download so I'll let it run.  If it fails, I'll wait for my adaptor.

  • Yep, it'll use wifi of the router but the wifi chip in the watch is very slow. Was going to take hours when I did mine, in GE it took about 10 mins if that

  • It took a bit less than 14.5 hours to download the 10.9 GB North America map.

  • Super slow but well done for staying the course! When you get an update or want to try another map def use the USB cable via GE

  • Definitely going the GE route next time.
