Marathon training plan - way too much recovery

I have used the built in training plan for one previous marathon, and I’m using it again with a goal time of 2:45. It’s ambitious, but achievable. I run 40-55 miles each week and balance speed, recovery, rest, and distance very well.

For the last ten days it has given me almost nothing but recovery runs, and I have entered the peak phase. My sleep scores are 85+ every night. I am “rested and recovered” and in the green/blue zone for training readiness. My recovery time is low - less than 24 hours. I am not hurt, sick, or overworked. My HRV is in my balanced zone every night.

For the last ten days it has tried to give me a recovery run every single day. I did two in a row and took an extra rest day to make sure nothing was awry, but it’s still at it. My plan will say today is recovery, and then the next day will be baseline, threshold, or sprints. As soon as I run for less than 25:00 in zone 2 or below and barely break a sweat, I’m given a recovery run for the next day instead. I went from having one recovery run every ten days to six over the course of nine days. I thought it was slowing me down for a bit to enter the peak phase, but that's clearly not what is happening.

It’s getting old, and I’m just at the point now of skipping ahead a couple of days to a real workout instead of doing my 4th-5th day of recovery this week. I can't have multiple weeks with fewer than 30 miles at this point in my training. My I’m race is in six weeks and I’m supposed to be peaking, not tapering.

Pretty disappointed in this right now because it was working well and balancing things well for me up to this point, and now I feel like it’s detracting from my training.

  • I've also had this watch for over a year, so I don't think it needs any more time to calibrate to me.

  • I experience similar behaviour. Can you please check: are your Forerunner and Connect App in sync as far as the training is concerned? Sometimes my Forerunner plans to do a 2:15'00 run while Connect shows "30 mins Basic." During synchronisation my Forerunner overwrites its plan with the Connect plan... And sometimes it syncs the other way. I don't understand either.

It worked perfectly before but lateley it is really disappointing indeed.

  • They are indeed in sync. I can sort of bypass this by going ahead to a different day, but I enjoyed how well balanced the plan was before this started happening.

I have lost multiple days of “Sprint”, “anaerobic”, “threshold”, or even “baseline”. Today was supposed to be sprints, but now I’m being given another 24 minute recovery run to recovery from my totally exhausting 24 minute recovery run from yesterday.
