Default map zoom level, how to reset back from 15 meter to 170 meter?

Forerunner 965, at f/w version v21.22.

Since about a 1 or 2 weeks or so, the default map zoom level while running is something like 15 meters (there is a circle at the top indicating that distance, see photo).
It used to be around 170 meters, which made a lot more sense to me.

How can I make the map zoom level go back to the 170 meter?

I don't know if I changed it myself (I sometimes try it different settings, and I don't think I changed anything related to so a thing recently, but not sure), or it is because of a firmware update.
Autozoom is ON (to be sure, I set it to OFF and back to ON in the Settings > Map screen)

  • I was able to get it back to 170 m, although I can't pinpoint the exact root cause or required fix (I fiddle around a bit).

Here's what I did, in case other people with a similar problem would like to try my steps:

    - With running activity enabled (but not started), I went to Settings for running > Map Settings and switched Use system settings to Off

    - In the settings that appeared, I switched Auto Zoom to Off, and I also toggled Lock On Road (not sure if it was On or Off)

    - The problem then seemed to be solved, i.e. showing 170 m zoom level

    - I played around a bit by setting Auto Zoom to On again. But that didn't make any difference, map zoom level remained okay at 170 m.

    - Finally, I switched Use System Settings back to On. Still, all remained OK

I finally ended up with these system settings for maps: Auto Zoom = On and Lock on Road = On, with my map zoom level being 170m, as I wanted.

  • A few days ago, the issue re-appeared on my watched, in a slightly different form:

The zoom level was always (re)set to 6 or 7 km. I could zoom in, but that only lasted until I went to another screen or got e.g. a workout notification (e.g "pace too slow"). Activities other than running (such as walking and trail running)  were NOT affected and were showing fine.

Trying what worked before (fiddling with auto zoom and "use system settings" etc) did not work.

What DID work to get it fixed, was to do a reset to default settings for the Running activity, via Settings for Running > Default settings.
I had taken a few photos of my custom Running screens, and settings; so I could 'relatively' easily configure the reset.

BTW: I had also contacted Garmin support for this, but their suggestion was to do a complete factory reset of the whole watch. I didn't try that, but went with the above approach first. With good results.
