Breadcrumb-only screen

Considering how the turn-by-turn screen doesn't work/update and hasn't since 18.xx (https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/forerunner-965/forerunner-965---public-beta-bug-reports/i/public-beta-version-18-xx/turn-by-turn-doesn-t-update-screen-getting-nearer) what would be awesome to take advantage of the amoled screen('s black point being off using no power) would be having a data/map screen showing only the course/breadcrumb navigation much like older Garmins and current Instincts. Most of the time for navigation I just need to see the trail/course and approaching turns, not buildings around me.

I love the maps on this, but most of the time an outline of the route is enough. Perhaps this could be either another data screen option or like a low-power screen for map navigation when battery is really needed as having a bright screen of colour when a sort of AOD mostly-black/off would be super useful. Is this possible?

Or, this might sound crazy, could the turn-by-turn navigation screen be made to work please?

  • If you want to show just the breadcrumb trail without actual maps, have you tried changing the Map Type under Map Layers to Base Map instead of TopoActive? Then you would get only the most basic map with largest roads but without any detail. And if you then turn on dark mode in map settings, you have a dark background.

  • Excellent idea! I made a new activity, 'Breadcrumb', switched to base map with dark mode on, but found it has a 'bright' dark background, so enabled High Contrast which made it 'off' black. Of course with no map loaded you don't get 'next waypoint' or turns according to distance, but the Topo Active map in dark high contrast is quite nice. Otherwise, set it to a mapping map layer then start the course and then switch to 'base map' to disable maps. Voila, a breadcrumb map with navigation:

I can't disable the distance ring unless I zoom in a bit, but it's kinda helpful.
