bug: "No more slots to install" when upgrading app

Bug in either fr965 or in the android Connect IQ app: when I have 32 apps/df-s/wf-s installed and there's an update to one of them and I try to update it I get error messages like: "No more slots to install", "Installation failed - There aren't any available slots. Uninstall an existing app or watch face and try the installatio..."

  • This is not a bug. It has always been the case that at least one slot must remain free for updates.

  • The fact it's not working from the beginning doesn't make it normal. It's a bug.

    Edit :

    What is a Software Bug?

A software bug is a problem that causes a program to crash or produce invalid output. It is usually caused by insufficient or erroneous logic. A bug can be an error, mistake, defect, or fault that may cause failure or a deviation from expected results.

I've been using Garmin watches since 2016 (since fenix 3 HR). I discussed this with product support years ago.

This is how it works. It is "by design".

According to Product Support, the behavior of the software is not a "bug" because it behaves the way the programmers designed it. The program code produces the result that was programmed. It is therefore not a software bug.

The watches have a certain amount of memory and slots for IQ Stuff. You can use all the slots. However, updates can then no longer be carried out. If you want IQ updates to be possible, make sure that at least 1 slot remains free.

  • Yeah, well, I think it's a design bug then :) Anyway you could then say that we don't need more than 2 CIQ data fields per activity, because that's how it always was. We don't need more activities (I don't remember the number, but there was something like 60 max until recently when they finally increased the number), etc...

There are design decisions that make sense, but this is not one of them. It doesn't even sound like a design decision (at least if I look at the UX design) It's an implementation issue.

  • I suggest that you contact product support and have a developer ticket created.

  • Does it even make sense for devices which have gigs of storage for maps and music to be limited to 32 apps and a handful of megs? Even the devices which have neither maps nor music could probably handle a larger limit. (To be fair, I think newer devices have a higher size limit - in terms of megs, but the numerical limit - in terms of number of apps - is still really low.)

It's think it's pretty obvious that a lot of restrictions on the devices (and Connect) are a result of legacy design decisions which probably made sense 10 years ago.

In any case, I do think it's bad design to require a free app slot for apps to be updated.
