Garmin 965 Ultra Run Issue - Lost Tracklog During 187km Race

I’ve been using the Garmin 965. A year ago, I wore it during my first 100-mile race. I was able to charge it while running, and I was thrilled that it accurately tracked the entire race when I used the ultra run mode.

However, a few weeks ago, while training for my upcoming 187km race, my watch froze during a session, causing the tracklog to cut off. This was concerning because I had never encountered this issue before.

Today, I just completed the 187km race, but at hour 44, my watch displayed a blue triangle error and froze for a long time. After restarting it, the entire 187km tracklog was gone. What frustrated me the most was not having access to my watch during the race. I couldn’t check the route, I had no idea what time it was, how far I had run, or how much distance I had left.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any advice on how to prevent it from happening in the future?

  • Try to look into the folder //GARMIN/TempFIT/ when connected to the watch by the USB cable - there is a small chance the unsaved activity file is still there.

Otherwise, unfortunately I do not have really any direct solution, but splitting the activity into smaller sections may mitigate the risk of losing all the data. The individual activities may be then merged with an external tool (i.e. FIT File Tools)

And I would definitely recommend reporting it to the Support, sending them also the entire folder //GARMIN/Debug (containing the crashlog)

  • You should be proud to have finished a 187k race, but I understand the frustration of loosing the tracklog.

Crashes happen, although they are not frequent. Maybe they can occur more with longer activities. Garmin doesn’t do much testing and definitely not for ultra’s.

How to prevent this from happening in the future? You cannot. Maybe using a less complex watch will help.

On my Macbook I don't see these folder. Thanks.

  • On a Mac you may need to install the Android File Transfer (or an alternative) for accessing the folders on the watch. Or use a PC - it can access the folders without any apps or drivers.
