FR965 : annoying "gesture" implementation (turns screen on/off) vs Venu 2 (turns screen on for set duration)

EDIT : it turns out this is the expected behavior on the FR965, unlike on the Venu 2 where the "Gesture" will turn on the screen for a set duration and isn't subject to unwanted movements. Seems like a downgrade/bug to me...

  • Original Post : Not sure if it's new with 21.19 but I hadn't noticed it before on my (admittedly new) FR965 : this morning while controlling the music playing on my phone after long pressing the music button the screen went black almost immediately and this happened several times.

I tried to replicate when static at my desk and it seems the problem is related to the wrist movement, something you don't really control when running, if you flip slightly the watch towards the outside/vertical, the screen goes off completely (not even low intensity), if it's horizontal, no problem.

Is that new ? Can't we just have the standard "backlight" time-out regardless of the wrist position ?

  • Isn't it related to gesture with AOD off.

I have AOD off and if I turn wrist inwards it comes on and outwards it goes off .

  • it looks like it but frankly it's not great when running when your wrist keeps moving and the screen goes off when you don't want it to. Hadn't noticed that with the previous version.

  • Mine doesn't do that (go black) in Activity though. Switch AOD on During Activity

System> Display> During Activity > AOD  SWITCH ON Then it dims only when moving wrist back,

  • Well in Activity I do have AOD OFF, looks like I need to turn it ON then, don't really need it though and it's going to hurt the battery...So I did that and when the wrist flicks back the BL goes OFF but the screen stays ON. The BL would still go off if you flick "accidentally" too.

Another option is to turn Gesture OFF so no more problem with the screen going black immediately if the wrist is flicked "accidentally" when hitting a button...but that means you need to touch a button ;-)

  • Its not a backlight per se (that is what we had with MIP, there is no backlight with an AMOLED) it bright and dim display.

I've used my watch like this since I got it on release and its been fine for me. Battery life has never been a concern. I find it better to have a transition from partial screen brightness to full brightness for running rather than fully off to on as it seems smoother esp when doing intervals etc

Another option is to turn Gesture OFF so no more problem with the screen going black immediately if the wrist is flicked "accidentally" when hitting a button...but that means you need to touch a button ;-)

Or touch the screen if touch is enabled may achieve the same, I think

I have touch enabled generally and on most activities. Some specific ones I  have set as touch off where I am likely to touch teh screen whilst doing movements , such as Yoga

  • Yes I'll try both methods and see what works best for me.
I've also set a hotkey to turn Touch ON/OFF...unfortunately Touch OFF is broken with the latest update !

  • So I did a run with AOD ON and the screen no longer goes off BUT I'm still seeing a lot of abnormal/constant "AOD Bright" to "AOD Dim" switching when using the buttons, this can't be normal surely ? I'm pretty sure my Venu 2 never did that and I can't see how I would have missed that during the few runs I did with the FR965 before the 21.19 update.

Do you have that on your watch too ?

  • Can't say I've noticed something like that, but I tend to use touch normally. We all have certain things which we notice differently I guess.

Have you done a soft reset after installing the update ? Hold in light button until the watch shuts down completely. Leave it say 20 secs , then start it again.

  • Thanks for the hint, always a good idea after a FW update to do a soft reset.

So I did that and it seems to have...fixed the Touch On/Off problem ! I'll see during my run tomorrow if the "Flicking" behavior has changed or not. If not I guess I'll just disable "gesture" during Activities and tap the screen or use a button to view the data.

  • So I checked on my Venu 2 and the "Gesture" does not behave the same as on the FR965, it's only used to "wake-up" the display (or go from AO Dim to Bright), not to switch it off. There is little impact for desk use but when you're running with the arm movements it's quite noticeable.

As a result I did my last run with Gesture OFF and either tapped the screen (when TOUCH is ON) or used the buttons. Light button is best to avoid changing screens.
