Improved Lactate Threshold Measurement Feature in 21.19

21.19 is now on rollout. It contains an improved lactate threshold measurement as described here https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=bslU8erVhw62Xil6ptnEE6

So now the lactate threshold is automatically adjusted even when not using a strap heart rate monitor. As we know the WHR is inaccurate and wrong in many cases... so the automatic lactate threshold measurement is now messed up too in cases where I accidentally forgot to disable this feature after using a strap and reverting to the whr, am i right?

  • Congratulations Garmin! This week my girlfriends watch calculated a new lactate threshold after an easy run. It is now the same as her max HR (which was set manually after it has been determined in a step test).

  • I still haven't received an update for my LT since I got an update to 21.19. Now I'm on 21.20 and have already done 3 runs, intervals sprints and slow, but still no LT update.

  • How do you know it needs to be updated? Mine hasn't either but it seems OK.

  • I usually get an update once a week. I always change my runs, long runs, intervals, short sprints and something between. But my last LT update is from December 2nd. I've been running 11 times since then.

  • Such frequent changes don't really make sense though, like VO2Max changes or any other physiological changes.

  • today my girlfriend made this run using a HR-Belt:

and this is the resulting lactate threshold:

so the LSHF ist now above the maximum HR.

  • I finally got a lactate threshold update on 21.20 (on a run using HRM Pro+). My max HR went up by 8 points (and is now totally unrealistically high), and my lactate threshold shot up by 6 points (being also now unrealistic). The threshold pace is also now way too fast. I manually reset the values back to earlier realistic values, except for threshold pace that you cannot manually set (at least on the watch).

So I join the chorus of people who find the new algorithm disappointing...

  • Immediately upon loading 21.20 my Lactate Threshold jumped from the reasonable 162bpm it was prior to 177bpm, on a threshold style run I had done where my HR never exceeded 170bpm (and that was in a hill sprint at the end).

Yeah, the new algorithm is hosed.

  • So is this confirmed bugged?

First run after upgrading firmware -- on a base run -- my threshold went up by thirteen points from a previous Guided Lactate Threshold Test with results that reasonably felt right.

  • Garmin-Sierra, can you or someone for Garmin please give a statement? It seems like something is going wrong for a lot of people.
