Screen protector for 965 : TPU or "Hybrid" or Film ?

There seem to be three types of protectors for the 965 :

TPU :

Ans "Hybrid" sold as "tempered glass" when it obviously isn't. I've had these on my Venu and they get scratched pretty quickly and need to be changed.

FILM (Brotect Flex type)

Has anyone tried both ? If yes, which one do you thin looks best and is more durable ?

Thanks !

  • …“If damage occurs as a result of using a third-party anti-glare screen protector, the device will not be covered under Garmin's warranty.“..

  • Interesting, I've had Garmin watches since 2004 and that's the first time I've seen this ! You wonder what kind of scenario Garmin came across to come up with that kind of policy. Anyway it's not anti-glare here it's for protection ;-)

  • Well, I think it's quite obvious that Garmin cannot take responsibility for damages caused by third party products. For example, if the adhesive of the protector damaged the coating on the glass. Or if a shattered glass protector scratched the glass underneath.

That said, I've always used a protector on my old Fenix 5+ and now 965, and never had any issues, even when I had to replace my 965 because of a faulty vibration motor. If you buy a reputable screen protector, the risk of it damaging the screen is negligible.

  • I use TPU I don't see the protector on screen. I don't like bezels + screen protectors because they change the look of the watch. I usually do need a couple of attempts attaching the TPU before I am happy with the result. When playing racket sports padel/squash I wear a sweatband over the watch to protect it against my teammate.

  • There's no good choice for a screen that is rounded near the edge. You either have the film that probably has a very limited performance and peels off after a few months, or try a glass protector that is made for a smaller radius, but then it doesn't protect the edges.

I wouldn't be worried about the official Garmin least stuff. All these watched are supposed to withstand some regular usage "beat ups" and Garmin wouldn't repair for free any damage that might be caused by a hit that any if these screen protectors could prevent. So you either go without and have a higher chance to damage the watch and buy a new one, or you use some protector that will probably not for any harm to the watch, only to the Garmin sales bottom line...

  • To be fair, I've never had a TPU protector peel off from my watch. If you buy a reputable protector, they are surprisingly good and invisible.

  • After about 6 months I start to see something in one side. At the beginning it looks like a small bubble, but then it grows. Usually it also becomes whitish. And then it grows to the sides. I think it might be explained by either of these things or a combination:

    Bad glue

Me moving my arm in a certain way and doing the same movement again and again. Probably when I wear long sleeve clothes over the watch and looking at the watch.

  • What protector are you using? I've been really happy with Brotect Flex (which claims to have stronger glue for curved glass).

  • "or try a glass protector that is made for a smaller radius" - actually I had a couple from my old FR955 so I put one on while waiting for the TPU and Hybrid I ordered and it's not bad...except that as expecteddust is already getting stuck on the sides underneath :-(

  • "Brotect Flex" - that sounds like it might be the "hybrid" pictured in the first post ?
