Training Effect are wrong when selecting Multisport mode.

Hi. I noticed a problem when creating multisport activities like following;

1- Do a Run activity

2- I press change sport to Walk after reaching my heart rate zone 2 at the end

Result : Training Effect of the Walk activity, load and calories are seriously wrong. 1k gentle walk (Zone 0-1) and I get aerobic training effect almost like a run of 4.2 !!

The Training Effect about the Run match what I usually get. Doing one activity after the other does give me the right Training Effet like 0.1 (recovery) for the Walk portion.

Maybe I dont understand the usage of multisport but I thought after a run I will register a short walk to show a recovery moment during that specific activity.

Anyone else have similar behavior when using Multisport mode?

  • In short, the behavior you are seeing is normal.

    When you do a multisport activity, the peak TE is calculated/preserved for the entire activity, across all sports included. The peak EPOC (which is the main basis of TE) is calculated as if there was no change in sport.

    If you start a new activity, it is likely that the residual EPOC/recovery need from the first activity is taken into account for the new activity EPOC accumulation, since the watch adjusts your stamina potential.

    As EPOC had more like an exponential rate of decrease, the residual EPOC at the start of the new activity could be much lower than the peak EPOC of the previous activity.

    There is no need to change activity from running to walking. This multi-sport feature is useful for triathletes as the TE calculation is specific to pace (running) and power (cycling) data, in particular for anaerobic effect. Aside from these 2 specific activities, the TE for any activity will be calculated only with HR/HRV dynamics and will most likely be similar regardless of the activity chosen, and underestimating anaerobic training effect (again, except for running with pace and biking with power)

  • Thank you very much for this detailed explanation, it actually makes sense now that I understand the calculation method better. I will now actually log 2 separate activities in the future, unless I decide to do a duathlon or even a triathlon one day. Slight smile
