Unable to reschedule any future training from Garmin Coach

Hi everyone,

I use the Garmin Coach plan specified for the event (not using an actual coach like coach Jeff or Amy) so the workouts are planned by the watch. Unfortunately, I found out that I have no option whatsoever to reschedule a FUTURE training (the one that has not happened yet). Example: It's Monday, I want to reschedule Wednesday's training to Tuesday.

I followed the instructions provided by Garmin here https://support.garmin.com/en-ZA/?faq=IkvWNeIoSd48GIYCjkhlo7&productID=125677&tab=topics but I have no option that they provide:

1. On the IOS Garmin Connect app I do not have 3 dots available next to the scheduled workout. Therofre no option to click reschedule.

2. On the Garmin Connect WEB application I do not have 3 dots available next to the scheduled workout.

3. On the Garmin Connect WEB application I tried dragging and dropping workouts in Calendar but it does not allow me to move the Garmin Coach workouts.

Even on the Garmin website, it says that it is possible "If you know ahead of time that you won't be able to complete your next scheduled workout, you can reschedule it from one of these platforms." So WHY I can't have that option?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • But I want to do the workouts, but not necessarily in the order they force them on me. Example: Gamin says base run 68min tomorrow and base run 35min Wednesday but tomorrow I have also a strength session and Wednesday evening is our club meet where we tend to run 60/70 minutes so I just want to swap around those 2 but i cannot... I'll do the 35min base run regardless tomorrow but god knows what will be next then... I thought the idea of a plan was to, you know, "plan" things in advance

  • But I want to do the workouts, but not necessarily in the order they force them on me

That's not how it is designed to work. Either you trust the system, and do what the watch suggests you today; based on the data it collected about you, or you do not trust it, and in that case you better manage your training in a different way - for example using individual workouts, or the self-guided plans, or 3rd party system like TrainingPeaks, or a true personal coach.

  • That's the problem. The watch only knows the data it collects. I trust it can provide adequate workout for my level of fitness but that's about it. It doesn't know anything else about me, not even that I am a member of a running club or which day I prefer doing hard workout and which day I prefer doing base. It doesn't even seem to be aware that there is such a thing as "parkrun day". So as a coach it is pretty crap...

  • In that case I do not understand why are you trying to use it. Just do what you think is the best for you, and do not start any Garmin training plans.

  • Sorry Trux but that is not the way modern software should be set up! It should be customizable and we are talking here about moving the dates of the future workouts - the simplest of them all. Also, if you defend Garmin and say that "we should trust the system and its suggestions" why then on Garmin Coach Plans with Trainers (Jeff, Greg, Amy) we can change the dates of the workouts but on these weekly once we can't? It's ridiculous - the inconsistency here is mind-blowing. I think Garmin watches are great but the UX is lacking simple things massively and you find out about it only once you buy a Garmin watch for the first time. Also, I have a feeling that official guides do not take into consideration all the options you can have. Funny thing (maybe because I've contacted the official Garmin support) but right now on this site https://support.garmin.com/en-ZA/?faq=IkvWNeIoSd48GIYCjkhlo7&productID=125677&tab=topics they have added a samll note: "NOTE: Workouts can only be rescheduled if you are using a plan that takes advantage of one of the three experts, Greg, Amy, or Jeff. Other plans do not have the ability to reschedule workouts."  IT WAS NOT THERE WHEN I WROTE THIS POST ;)

And why do they call everything Garmin Coach Plan when in fact it is a Daily Suggested workout? Again inconsistency, and poor UX. Why do you have a calendar function when you can't change anything on it?... There are tons of it but despite all of these annoying things, I will keep using it as it is the best watch for serious workouts. However, I wish they made an Apple watch that is consistent and thoroughly thought through (like all apple products) but with the power, battery and accuracy of the Garmin. I guess you can't have both!

  • It should be customizable

It is customizable. You can skip the workout, you can do it on another day, you can do something completely different, and you will always get a new adjusted workout taking in account what you really did. The implementation of the new training plans does not remove the rescheduling, it makes it unneeded. On my mind, it is a great improvement in comparison to the previous functionality, requiring a complicated shifting of the workouts on the calendar, and the result of the rescheduling was mostly just messing up the plan anyway. Now you do not need to care about any rescheduling, and let the watch just suggest you the the right workout to reach the goal.

  • And why do they call everything Garmin Coach Plan when in fact it is a Daily Suggested workout?

This is the new name for the Race Plan flavor of DSW of the past, where the DSW would change into a periodized plan to prepare for one or several races with a goal in the future.

The Garmin Run Coach (the new name) is kind of confusing with the older Garmin Coach Plans (by Jeff, Greg & Amy), but those are still available under Garmin Run Coach.

The Garmin Run Coach UI allows for the capture of several older DSW/Race Plans settings in a single shot (for example: days to train, long run day) that were available only on the watch, and the integration of editable training history (weekly mileage and average pace) which was only accessible for the older Garmin Coach Plans but not for the DSW/Race Plans, and the goals for the event (which was set up separately in the calendar event).

  • I totally agree. I appreciate trux clarify what the app is and isn't doing, but the bigger point is that it's dumb. For example, I want to do a long run each week, but sometimes it doesn't work out so I'd love to reschedule one suggested on Friday (I cannot do it Friday due to a work change), so I want to move to Saturday -- seems like Garmin would then work it witchery to "give me the best workouts" around that necessary change. If Garmin can schedule workout a week in advance "based on data" then I should be able to make 'what works for my actual life' changes and Garmin's data driven voodoo can adjust. The inflexibility means I miss long runs even when I want to/can do them and I'd prefer doing it with their suggested metrics. Silly silly.

  • I should be able to make 'what works for my actual life' changes and Garmin's data driven voodoo can adjust.

Yes, that is exactly how it works. You do whatever you want (or you do not do anything at all), and the workouts will adjust. No need to reschedule anything.

  • Hi - I was having this problem as well, so did as you had done and made the workout separately. But then when I went to select the workout on my watch (Forerunner 955 Solar) and went into the “run” sub category, I was able to select my event training plan. When in that, it came up a rest day, but I could navigate to the upcoming workout on a future day and select and do it. After completing it, the training plan has adapted and provided new training sessions for today and the rest of the week.

    Hope that helps for you!
