Garmin Pay for CIQ Fields

A few of my CIQ datafields now require payment through the new Garmin Pay feature.  I currently am already set up with a credit card in my Garmin Pay account but when I try to pay for these DFs it prompts me to add ANOTHER credit card to my Garmin Pay.  Am I doing something wrong here?

  • You’re not doing anything wrong. Garmin Pay for contactless payment is not exactly the same as Garmin Pay for the Connect IQ store, even though Garmin tries to present it that way, and even though Garmin employees have said that the intention is that you shouldn’t have to add a credit card for store payment if you already have one for contactless payments.

In particular, there are countries like Canada which have very limited support for Garmin Pay (contactless), because only a few banks support it. But even in those countries, you should be able to add pretty much any credit card for Garmin Pay (CIQ store).

I think there’s a huge amount of confusion here, due to the messaging not matching up with the implementation, to the point where DC Rainmaker insists that the payment system for monetized CIQ apps is not “Garmin Pay”. (He clearly sees Garmin Pay solely as the contactless payments feature.)

Then there’s the fact that another blogger wrote an article about CIQ monetization, and pointed out that you can get around Garmin Pay restrictions by using a Curve card (not realizing that’s only necessary for contactless payments, not store payments.)

TL;DR everyone either assumes that Garmin Pay for contactless payments and Garmin Pay for the CIQ store work the same way, or they assume that the CIQ store can’t be using “Garmin Pay” bc it doesn’t work the same way as Garmin Pay for contactless payments. All of this is down to the fact that the same name is used for 2 different things (or one thing is a subset of the other, at the every least).
