stutter audio with BT headphones after 10 min

I have a problem with my BT headphones.
I have already tried the problem with three different headphones.

The problem is as follows.
The headphones connect successfully and I can play the music (Spotify) successfully.

However, after a certain time (once 10 min, once approx. 20 min) the music starts to stutter. It sounds as if you have run out of range. Of course, it has not changed the range. Watch on my wrist and headphones in my ear.

I simply assume that either the headphones or the watch wants to save some energy and is reducing the BT power. Since it occurs with three headphones from different manufacturers, I suspect it's the watch doing it.
Is there any way to set or prevent this?

  • With my limited testing, I've only had the issue with my true wireless earbuds (i.e. two independent earbuds, like your chinese earpods) when wearing both earbuds. When I've tried it with just a single earbud (other earbud in case, not on/connected) I haven't been able to replicate the issue. I also wasn't able to replicate it with a Bluetooth speaker. I dunno, something to keep in mind, but based on my experience I'd expect your Sennheisers to not have an issue. Unfortunately I don't have another set of earbuds to test at the moment.

  • cheers. I'll do some more research.... currently sat re-testing the Shokz!  I'll retest my earpods singly as well.  I'll do some digging on 'issues with cheap bluetooth headphones', but there seem to be a significant number of people on the garmin forums with the problem,.although as 6603424 notes, they had the problem with several headphones....

  • I contacted Garmin chat just to see if they had any additional information on this reported issue. They said they are aware of the forum posts but were adamant it is a reception issue. "While we design our products to be compatible with most Bluetooth compliant headphones, there may be inherent reception issues that we unfortunately don't have the control over to resolve or fix." They said to continue to communicate with the forum admins about this issue...but so far I haven't seen a forum admin respond to any of the related threads.

  • Sadly I think this is just Garmin deflecting the issue. The headphones which the Garmin 165 music has issues with after 15 mins work perfectly well with my mobile phone even when it is in a completely different room. I severely worry if the Garmin BT antenna has issues with headphones that are only about 65cm away.

  • Oh yeah, 100% agree deflecting. Easy to blame the devices not made by them. My headphones also don't have any connection issues with my phone multiple rooms away. Additionally, when troubleshooting this issue I had my watch (FR955) on the charger and was moving about the house with no dropouts (reception dropouts - not the stuttering isuse at hand)...so I'm confident in the watch's antenna and reception between the watch and headphones. I understand them starting with it being a reception issue, but with all the anecdotal evidence they should realize it is something else.

  • Interesting! Just to add, i retested both the earbuds and the shokz, sat at my desk indoors.   Even with the watch in ‘training run’ mode (so with gps and alerts enabled), there were no issues even after an hour… so it looks like being outside, moving, is a factor.
    more testing to be done!

  • Same problem with my 965 too after 10 to 15 minutes the music starts to hang... the issue occurs only with ear buds ... Headphones like shokz or neck bands are absolutely fine.. but air conduction ear buds are now getting soo comfortable and using them with my FR965 is getting almost impossible.. garmin has to do something with this. Now on long runs I end up wearing my samsung watch on the other hand just for music purposes and garmin on left hand to track the run.

  • Ugh, just got my Epix Pro 2 set up with Spotify and got the stuttering about 45 min into my run. Not sure if the prompts affect it: I noticed the audio was weird after I stopped Spotify playback. One the reasons I went with the Garmin vs Coros was the audio options: didn't know of this issue. Quite frustrating. It is NOT the earbuds: never had this issue with my phone, computer, etc.

  • I had a pair of jlab headphones which had the problem, but never had an issue when paired with my phone, computer or anything else.

They stopped working so got a pair of jabra active 8 which don't seem to have any jitter when paired with my epix gen 2.

I still tend to use my phone to play music through though. I can't see why I wouldn't have my phone with me on a long run.
