Problem with the automatic pause in hiking mode

During the hiking activity, if I choose the automatic pause when I stop it will go on pause, but when I leave I always remain on pause. This only happens with hiking. My wife's forerunner 255 does it.

  • I've also seen this with my 255 and my recently purchased 965.  Oddly, it isn't a problem with the walking activity, it only happens with hiking.  I thought it might be a problem with the satellite detection when I'm surrounded by trees but it also happens in open spaces.

  • What is the setting for tracking during the hiking activity? Is it’s set to ultra trac than there is likely a longer delay before it picks up you are moving.

  • I've got it set to "Auto Select" (dynamic selection of best mode) on both my 965 and 255.  I'm setting it to "GPS only" with "Auto Pause when stopped" enabled and will try it on my hike tomorrow.

  • Aren't there 2 settings? Auto pause and auto start? Maybe it's only in swim?

  • Set my 965 to "GPS only" with "Auto Pause when stopped" enabled and it worked better on a short hike in a forested area this morning.  There was a slight delay when I stopped before the watch paused but the watch restarted almost immediately when I started walking again.  It seems like there's an issue with the gps auto selection in the hike app.  I'll try some more tests on the same trails and then switch back to "auto select" gps and see if the problem reoccurs.

  • No, there is no "auto start" setting for hikes on my 965 or 255.
