upgrading, does it still need acclimation period (and question about licenses)

After 5 years, I'm upgrading from the FR 945 to the FR 965 (perhaps even later today Slight smile assuming FedEx visits)

Two quick questions:

(1) I've read that you need to run for a while before the watch gives meaningful measures for some data (e.g. VO2max, race estimates, etc) - I wonder if my history from the 945 will transfer and eliminate this acclimation period? There's plenty of data from my 945 in the last 5 years.

(2) I've paid for a few watch faces for my 945 - assuming I can find the licenses (?) - will these transfer to the 965 or will I have to repurchase them again?

Any additional tips about the upgrade process would be greatly appreciated.  If it matters, I'm an Android/Windows users.

Thanks!

  • 2 - as your new watch will have a new device ID, you probably will need a new key for the watches to unlock

  • Ah, good point, I didn't know what they associated the license with (e-mail address, etc) but device ID makes sense. Thank you.

  • 1.  My transition from my 945 to 965 was pretty seamless from what I recall as far as the core metrics like vo2max / threshold... most of the other the items are based on vo2max result.  THere are a lot of things relating to recovery, HRV, chronic load.. that are added on the 965 so will take time to gather the data.  THings like endurance score , hill climbing, and some others either pulls in old data to some extent, so it at least gives you a starting point based on past info... doesn't start you out at zero or something.  DC Rainmaker review site has some good info on how that is done.

  • It depends. Some developers really tie it to email, some have hard coded secret. These will work I guess. More sophisticated apps will use device id and those won't. Even more sophisticated apps are tied to your device id, but are transferrable to new device - it will disable the paid features on the old device.

  • Good to know, thanks!

  • Cool .. I got my 965 yesterday, looks like most (much?) of it transferred, though not all of the history, but good enough. Took it out for my first run (short 5 miler) .. pretty impressed, and no issues with reading the display in the sun.  Now mulling over getting a screen protector possibly.  The laps display on the watch is oddly double spaced, it was better on the 945 where I could see 5 laps or so on one screen, here I can only see two before having to scroll. A minor thing, but odd that they would waste this space, esp given the high resolution.  Overall quite happy with the new watch.
