Yes. You can make it to beep, vibrate, or both.

Why would I want it to display my heart rate when notifications arrive? I mean, I have to confess some messages I receive might get my hr soaring, but still... 

Sorry, you misunderstood what I said. I was just being sarcastic about the fact that  the watch can do a lot of things but not the most important thing. That is displaying an accurate heart rate.

You already answered the OPs question so there was no need to say more about that, With your answer... it just struck me that it can do all of those other things but the most important function it cannot. So I was just speaking out loud.
