“EF” efficiency factor tracking

Seems to me improving efficiency is a huge part of running, and it would be easy to track (real time) efficiency factor.  Yet I find no way to do this on my Forerunner 965.  Whether comparing HR to pace, or Power to pace, this would be a very easy metric to track while running, and (I feel) would be a very valuable piece of information to track while running.  If anyone has any insight how to do this, please let me know.

  • I like that idea. Sounds like it would be useful ratio based running dynamics stats, in addition to the current Vertical Ratio (which is vertical oscillation/stride length).

  • Easy in theory , but pace/power and HR don't track directly or consistently from day to day, hour of day... so sure makes it tricky.  I know that I have tracked my paces vs HR for a long time, good way to track fitness and training progress.  However it is very easy to get too zoned in... one day my 8:00/mi pace can be 145bpm... then another day similar will be 138... often it's temperature related, how tired I am, or if sore... etc.  But time of day is big (6am vs 5pm +5bpm) , caffeine, adrenaline ... all play a role.

For instance I might do 1km intervals in training at 5:40/mi.... and hit 182bpm at the end of the 3rd interval... BUT... in a race 5k at a 5:55 (slower!) I might hit 183bpm at the end of the 1st KM!!!  due to race adrenaline.  But I do agree things like VO and running balance could probably be used or looked at to track fatigue/efficiency?  But again that is effected by wind/slope/surface etc.   so tricky work

  • I do notice when I was starting to fall apart in my June Marathon PR... my last few miles had a significantly different/higher VERTICAL RATIO and GROUND CONTACT TIME.... however I think some of that was water stops that started to get a bit 'sticky' lol as I took a stumble step here and there to get a better drink  lol

Overall notice more blips of higher VR/GC scattered after the first hour.  Possibly those are all water stop locations where I took a stutter step... not sure.
