Is my FR 965 defective? Connecting to Garmin Express Wait Time over USB Cable Connect-disconnect-connect

Hi all,

I had a quick question about the behavior of my FR965 watch when connecting it to a laptop over USB cable. When I first plugged in my new FR965, I noticed it was being wonky and disconnecting from Garmin Express. It wouldn't hold a stable connection. It was strange, at first, when the watch got to 100% battery, the screen would go black and not respond, and it would need a hard reset because the screen would totally go black. This got a little better after doing a factory reset and making sure the software was up to date. - I have no longer encountered this black screen of doom.

Now that I have done a software update, and a factory reset, things seem a little more stable, however, they are still a little strange between the computer and watch. Below is the process of getting the watch plugged into Garmin Express.

From FR 965 watch plug-in to USB.

1. Windows Connection sound happens, immediately the watch indicate that it has been plugged into USB with the "eject" button on the screen and battery life displayed.

2. After -10 seconds of waiting, The watch's screen still shows it's connected to a USB, but the computer hasn't recognized the watch's USB storage, Garmin Express has not recognized it either.

3. The computer makes a USB disconnection sound, but the watch still shows it's plugged in.

4. (10 - 20 Seconds more waiting, nothing seems to be happening)

5. The PC makes a USB connection sound a second time, (The Computer recognizes the USB storage on the watch, and then the watch is connected in Express.)

I have clocked the process for a full sync without any critical updates for my three different Garmin devices. The wait times are as follows

FR 265 - 16 seconds from plug-in, to full sync. (The watch is super quick, the computer recognizes the storage almost instantly on plug in, no connect-disconnect-connect as with the FR965)

Venu 2 - 25 Seconds (A little older device, but no odd connect-disconnect-connect like with the FR965)

FR965 - Process 1-5 as described above, the whole thing can take sometimes 40 seconds, or sometimes 1 minute and ten seconds.

So to summarize, at first the FR965 wouldn't hold a connection. Now it does, but it's slow to connect and does the connect, disconnect, connect.

Is this normal behavior for the FR965? I still have a 60-day return from my retailer if it's defective, however, I don't entirely know if it's defective, my theory is that maybe it's just because the watch is more complicated than the other devices with the maps and stuff, maybe it takes a little longer for the PC to access the watch's storage and connect to express? (Even though the 965 should in theory have the best hardware...)

It's not that I am impatient, but I just am worried about the way the FR965 acted initially out of the box, and when connecting to any of my computers (I have 2 very fast gaming laptops, and everything is up to date.) I've used the included USBC cable that came with the FR965 and USB A cable that came with the Venu 2, the results were the same in either scenario. I am just curious if this watch behavior could be an early indication that this watch is going to give me issues down the road in terms of connecting easily to computers.

Please let me know your experience with connecting your FR965, is it quick? Or is it as slowish as my steps 1-5 above?  I sincerely appreciate your responses!

  • Yes, that’s garmin software. I gave up on garmin express.

  • My connection on my 965 to my laptop with my newish watch from this spring is having similar issues with staying or even getting connected.  I have only used a single older cable from my 245... so maybe that is the issue (bad pins?).  Sometimes it helps if i spin the cable connector and reconnect.  Yesterday I couldn't get it to connect at all!   So not the same issue... but kind of points me towards the pin connector of watch/cable... or sensitivity of 'connection/communication'.  Will try to get a new cable to my office to see if that helps.

Just did some more testing , can't get it to work with just a charger block either, so looks like a bad cable at the moment.
