Power save mode automatically activating (FR 965)

Does anybody have any idea why power saving mode might self activate on the FR965. I have experienced it twice in the last 72 hrs. On latest firmware. Didn't do it before upgrade. Purchased watch about 2 weeks ago. Thanks in advance.

  • Are you referring to the power save thing that happens also if one opens and activity and leaves it open?

I've had a few occasions where it appears yes , I'm never sure if Ive bumped the activity button with my wrist unintentionally before hand.

  • Yes, I might be (I realise that sounds silly). I posted this question on Reddit and somebody answered saying basically the same thing.

To quote: "If you accidentally open the activities list say with water on the screen & clothing opening it it will turn on gps and wait for an activity to be started, and if you don't start one it will power save and turn off gps to save battery"

The thing is, the way I have my watch configured, the only way to get to an activity is via a button press then selecting the activity. I can't see how a new activity could start with an accidental button press, especially given that on the first occasion it happened I was asleep in the middle of the night wearing the watch. I assumed that it might have been due to multiple inputs on the touch screen but even that stretches credulity, even so after it happened again this morning I switched off touch screen. Now by some freak chance, it has happened again as I have been typing this reply. On this occasion the touch screen was disabled and my hands are on the keyboard so no chance of an accidental button press or of touch screen input.

The only other mitigating factor could be battery percentage. Currently it's at 18% so in the yellow but not in the red. This morning it was at 23% when it happened. When I was asleep two night ago it would have been over 50%, so I doubt it's battery related.

Any other thoughts or comments very welcome.

  • One will be able to assess over time I guess depending on the circumstances..  Every now and again one gets unexplained things . I had it yesterday and wasn't sure why,

  • Mine definitely not battery related as I never get below 50%, in fact it was above 75% so I think it has something to do with activities. Anyway its only a small irritant once in a while.

  • I find it quite annoying because if it succeeds in activating power saving mode it shuts down a lot of function inc HR tracking which is vital for sleep tracking.

    Thanks for your thoughts

  • I dont think so, If Its that activity thing it just stops the GPS as far as I know. It's Power Save Mode on the activity GPS.

I dont think it is the same as the Battery Saver mode

As an aside on teh activities what length Power Save setting do you have? I use Extended.

  • Oh, maybe we are talking about different things then - I think I meant "Battery Saver" mode. The other night when it happened it shut down HR so no sleep was recorded. I wrote the wrong thing in my original post. Thanks for pointing that out.

On activities I use normal i.e. it selects Dual band / GPS

  • Try and take a screenshot when it happens again .

I meant the power save setting in the activity .. it determines how long the system waits before putting activity into power save if one hasn’t pressed start.. look at it as for a race for example you want to use extended so it doesn’t do power off before your race ..

  • Mine just happened with 50+ percent battery,  the only suspicion I had was I recently paired a polar heart rate strap to my FR965.  I had it disconnected before sleep though, so was there a button I accidentally pressed while sleeping? Did anyone figure out why this happens?
