Garmin 965 MTP USB broken

My Forerunner 965 used to be recognised as an MTP device for USB file transfer by cable. For some reason, this has stopped working on multiple platforms (Linux, MacOSX) so I suspect this is a system update problem. Any suggestions?

  • What is your setting for System -> USB mode? If it's Garmin (and not MTP), you'll have to manually accept MTP on the watch after plugging it in.

If that's ok (and a force reboot of the watch doesn't solve it), my next guess would be a faulty USB cable (especially the connector on the watch end). I've once had a Garmin cable that did charge my old Fenix 5+, but didn't do data transfers.

  • Often the watch end of the cable gets oxidized. To clean it I immerse that end of the cable in pure vinegar for a few hours, then brush it with an old toothbrush.

Also, I would suggest that you plug in the watch before you plug the USB end to the power supply to avoid electric arcs which oxidize the contacts on the watch and on the cable.

  • I have been struggling with this all morning.  Tried 2 USB-C to garmin cables - 1 brand new and never used before and no luck.  Finally grabbed a old beat up cheap Amazona USB-A to Garmin cable and it worked 1st try.  Not sure if USB-C is the issue or what.  So frustrating.

  • You need to have a charging+data USB cable. Most off-brand cables you buy online are charge cables only. Thus the data connection required to talk to a computer won't work. The cables that Garmin sells themselves are more expensive but are charge+data cables.
