Bug?: Storm Alert at the beginning of activities

I have been getting Storm Alerts soon after I start any GPS-based activity.

Is this a bug, or is it a configuration issue on my end?

  • I had this when I had a fenix6. There's a setting where you can change how the barometric changes are interpreted by the watch: either as change in the weather or as change in elevation or automatic. Changing that setting will "fix" the issue you have, but be prepared that you might experience other strange things depending on the setting. I.e if you're spending your whole day in the house (1 floor) and you see altitude changes, or you start a run, finish at the same point and the ascent != descent .

Go to the altitude widget - up key - settings - sensor mode

  • So which setting (between change in the weather or as change in elevation or automatic) do you think will solve the issue?

  • I don't know, go and test which works best for you. Just be prepared, there's no perfect setting, each has it's pros and cons

  • I think the issue actually has to do with the Auto Cal. feature. I have it turned on, so every time I use satellite systems the altimeter will self-calibrate.

Apparently, throughout the course of today as a low pressure weather system moved overhead my watch increased my altitude by ~300 ft. Then, when I started my run my watch adjusted my altitude back down to reality.
I wouldn't be surprised if this has to do with the Storm Alerts.

Also though, what is up with the altitude drift when I clearly was hardly changing my location at all throughout the day? I Figured the Auto sensor mode would be smarter than that...

  • I get the same storm alert message after a GPS-based excursion, when going down in altitude by car e.g. from 1200 to 800 meters. Maybe due to a barometer pressure change that should be filtered off, in case not being matched by a GPS altitude change

  • However GPS turned on with no activities increases battery consumption. So I keep alarms turned off apart manually turning them on with activities like excursion or so
