Triathlon auto sport change and Edge Extended display not working together

I've used the Edge extended display with my FR 965 in the past and it has worked great.  I did a triathlon yesterday, and while setting up my watch, I selected the Triathlon 'auto sport change' feature on a whim.  I then enabled the extended display on my Edge 530.  The computer found the watch and went into waiting mode as it should.  I did my swim and transitioned into T1 without touching any buttons and based on the data I saw later the auto sport feature worked well.  Walking with the bike out of transition I saw that the watch and Edge computer connected.  But once I began riding, I heard a beep on the watch initiating the ride portion of the triathlon followed by the Edge losing its connection to the watch.  For the whole ride, the Edge kept looking for the watch, to no avail.  Luckily, the FR 965 did what it was supposed to do and captured all the info (I do not take my hands off the handlebars while riding on the tri bars, so not able to see any of that data).  But it would have been nice to been able to get an idea of distance, time, and effort on the bike computer instead of a 'looking for watch, make sure it is turned on' message on it...

I realize this is incredible hard technology to make it look simple and functional, so when it doesn't work, and I rely on it, it is pretty distracting...especially in the middle of a race.

  • Thanks for posting this! I was just playing with my new watch making sure I knew how triathlon mode worked and it asked me if I wanted to enable auto sport change mode. I use extended mode on my bike computer as well. I'm going to stick to the manual transition changes when I race tomorrow. Thanks again!

  • The same thing is happening when I try to use my Edge 530 and FR965 in a triathlon activity regardless of whether ‘auto sport change’ is on or off. Extended display works perfectly with bike activities alone, so the problem seems to be isolated to triathlon. I’ve tried several different mock triathlon scenarios where I leave the Edge on from the beginning and disconnect by distance (during swim), turn it on in T1 or turn it on after starting the bike activity. When they do connect, it’s typically only for seconds and no data shows up in the Edge. The most predictable result was when I wait to turn on the Edge after starting the bike leg - like a few minutes into the bike. Even then, they will often disconnect from each other. The only time they did connect and display data was after simply waiting for another 1-3 minutes. There were a few instances where the 965 and Edge were connected and reflecting time and speed correctly, but the power meter lost connection to the watch. This is super frustrating with a race in 24 hours! I will troubleshoot and post a solution if I happen to find one that works consistently.

  • I talked with Support for a long time today and they are getting engineers on this. I did find afterward that rebooting my watch seems to clear up the extended display issue the next time an activity is started. Gonna try power cycling the watch before the swim tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
