Route calculation error & Route calculation takes for ages

I have a Garmin Forerunner 965 and have been having problems with the routing functionality for a few months now.

When I load a route on the watch and start the navigation, it takes a very long for the route to load (5-10 minutes). Although the route is not long (about 10 km). When I leave the route, I get an error message that there are no routable roads or paths. After that the Navigation stops. This happens both in the forest and in the city. It doesn't matter whether I load a route from Garmin Connect or create my own. The map (TopoActive Europe is up to date (version 2024.10).

If I navigate to a destination on the watch, the watch can automatically update the route if I leave the original path.

This is totally annoying and I can't use pre-planned routes. Do you have any idea what I can do?

  • I guess that on your watch, you have set routing setting of your activity to "follow map", in which case the watch tries to re-route every part of your route. Change it to "follow route", it should help.

  • This indeed speeds up the loading process. But I want to use the feature, that the route is calculated dynamically, when I leave the course. Therefore I used the mode „follow map“. (Use the Follow Course option to navigate a course exactly as it appears, without recalculating. Use the Use Map option to navigate a course using routable maps, and recalculate the route if you stray from the course.)

  • there anything else I can do? Hello Garmin, what do you say?

  • This is a years long issue, some says you should delete the map and install again with garmin express - I did it, did not resolved the issue.

So yes, it is garbage now, report it to the garmin support, or just accept that it won't be solved ever.
