How to import gpx with both correct virtual pacing information and turn-by-turn navigation?

I have a gpx file, containing a course including pacing information (FYI: created using ultrapacer.com). It is a gpx with hills/mountains, so pacing varies substantially over the course.

When I import the gpx using Garmin Connect, and navigate the course, I do not get the correct virtual pacer information. The virtual pacer seems to show the ahead/behind time compared to the average pace for the whole course. I would like to have the ahead/behind time compared to the actual pacing in the imported gpx file.

I use navigate/course instead of racing an activity, since racing an activity does not give me turn-by-turn directions (see also https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation-archive/f/fenix-5-series/239355/how-to-race-an-activity-hint-don-t-race-an-activity).

How should I import a gpx with pacing information so that I get both correct virtual pacer information and turn-by-turn navigation?

  • If possible export the route as tcx and not gpx

  • Our watches can't import tcx.

I tried this a couple of years ago and come to the conclusion that my Garmin watch do not follow the time data in course file. I used fit files, but probably doesn't matter. At least it didn't use the time data exactly. My feeling was that it was a mix.

Try pace pro. Then you need to go with Garmin Connect elevation data, but you can load your own navigation course file after pace pro is started. (So you don't get Garmin navigation course points).

(When my injury heals, I'll see if it's possible to find, understand and exchange the pacepro file.)

  • I have tried PacePro earlier, but I found it quite limited, especially in the mountains. There is a silly max pace limit of 12:30 min/km which makes it useless in steep terrain. That is why I turned to ultrapacer.com. It is much better for creating pacing plans, but unfortunately I am hitting this issue above.

I actually also have tried fit files, and my watch does use the time data. I just have not find a good gpx to fit converter yet. I have tried a few ones, but they do not give satisfying turn by turn directions. How did you create your fit files?

  • I created them at plotaroute.com, maybe not the most advanced in this aspect, and also tried alter in FitFileRepairTool.

  • TCX can be imported via Garmin Connect Web.

If you have a plotaroute account you can also set it to automatically sync your courses to Garmin account and it will sync turn-by-turn and allow use of virtual pacer.

  • Yes, I can import a TCX file that I created with ultrapacer. But it has the same problem has GPX: The Virtual Pacer just assumes the average pace. I just double-checked this. I did a test with a short round of a few km. The first 1000m were uphill, scheduled pacing about 10:00 min/km. Average pacing for the whole course about 7:00 min/km. Checked that the TCX file contained the correct timing information. Imported tcx file, navigated the course. Did the first 1000m in around ten minutes, Virtual Pacer showed that I was 3 minutes behind...

    I will try plotaroute later.
