18.23 HR & swimming bugs??

Hello everyone,

I have a Garmin 965 - owned for about 6 months.

Working fine until a couple of days ago when I have experienced the following bugs during different activities:

- Swimming in Indoor pool: I Swim x1km twice a week (have done so for about months now).  Yesterday, my watch froze on 225m, stayed on this distance (despite time and other data being captured).  I ended the activity & tried again (by starting new activity with the watch on other wrist) this time it didn't move off zero/ dashes for the distance.

- Outdoor run: So today, I tried my typical 5k tempo run (my normal pace for a 150-160H run is around the 4:55-5:20 mark Give or take) - my route has some gentle, 80m elevations so a run, for me where I'd expect my HR to go higher than what I got (a mostly constant 118 for most of the 5k).  I tried throwing in some fast strides to see if it spiked my HR - but no change at all (usually I'd it 170/180 when sprinting like this during run).

For both activities I  had warmed up before & ensured my strap was fitted correctly (i.e as I have been doing so for last 6 months)

Has anyone else experienced these types of issues? It seems to be since the most recent couple of updates?

Can anyone at Garmin confirm that there is an issue & developers are looking into it? I'd appreciate knowing the answers to these Q's before I return the watch to the store/ manufacturer (given that it is still under warranty).

The data provided us a hugely motivational tool for myself & if the trust in that data is compromised then the hardware (in this case a £599.99 watch) seems an expensive, redundant item.

Thanks in advance for anyone who replies with info/ tips.

Cheers,

Dan

  • Yesterday I noticed that HR readings are off, definitely below the real value. So I took off my HR chest strap, for I thought its battery might be drained resulting in incorrect readings. I did 21 hill repetitions but strangely enough you cannot see it on HR chart... connect.garmin.com/.../2 I will see today if the problem reappears.

  • #1 restart the watch. I had this from time to time also on my Epix Pro. It will work again after the watch is restarted.

#2 Optical HR can be glitchy all the time. If you want to trust the data, use a belt to get accurate results.

  • Yes, the wrist HR is way off. For me it seems way less accurate when doing just steps. I'll do a really fast walk and look and my HR is in the 80s. Today I did what you tried I took off on a sprint and my HR only hit 110. I restarted the watch and did the exact same thing. After 3 minutes just walking my HR was around 100 and I took off on a sprint and my HR hit in the 140s which is right about correct. I am regretting upgrading from 17.26 to 18.23.

  • Yes, over the last few runs I've done, the HR is not showing correctly when doing interval runs. I've posted some screen shots in the other thread about this, you can clearly see the HR goes missing during the fast part of the run.
