Ver 18.23 and HRM Pro Plus

Hi all,

After the latest update to version 18.23 my Forerunner 965 detects the HRM Pro Plus as usual and all seems fine, but when the activity has started I see that the watch's sensor is still on. It used to turn off, since the strap is supposed to record the HR data during an activity. What happened?

Everything else works as expected. Even the data seems to be accurate, just wonder if there has been a change about that? I read the release notes and couldn't see anything related, just that the optical sensor has been improved (whatever that means).

Thank you

  • Yeh. It’s quite annoying. In the past I could see if the cheststrap was used because then the optical sensor was off. And I could see the battery of my cheststrap was empty, because the optical sensor was on, That was convenient.

Now garmin decided it’s better for garmin pay, which I don’t use. And it’s better if the cheststrap fails, the optical sensor takes over more quickly. Well, that split second of data I might miss is the least of my problems during a run. (And I don’t have many problems during a run)

Garmin is really working on all the wrong things.

  • Elbo, you seem to be very disappointed with your watch and bring that up at every possible opportunity, but considering all other things that are wrong with your 965, I'm surprised that you call it "convenient" that you have to look at the underside of the watch to know if the HRM strap is connected...

  • Thank you for your replies. :)

Bitti, I agree with you. It quite strange to me that I had to look at the sensor to determine whether or not the strap was really connected Sweat smile

Now, it's even worse since I can only rely on the message before I press 'Start'. I just don't get why then don't put a little icon in the UI, like with the other icons there. Simple and effective.

Anyway, if that's how is going to work in the future, then I'll have to get used to it and live with Garmin's bad design choices.

    Cheers

  • I personally don't care either way, but having redundancy in heart rate measurement is not particularly "bad design choice" in my opinion. The ANT+/BLE signal from the strap is quite weak, and I've a couple of times noticed that I loose HR for a moment when running under some power lines, etc. Then having the watch take those few moments from wrist would be nice (if both hr sensors agreed before the drop). But yes, it's a change and we'll have to adapt to it.

  • My previous watch, a forerunner 935 was quite alright. My new watch is a huge step backwards in about every possible way. The screen, the battery life, the software quality, the things garmin is working on.

Convenient, or only possible way to see if a cheststrap is connected? At least my stryd gives an notification it is connected. Don't know if other brand cheststrap gives better connected notification. Maybe I find out when my garmin tri cheststrap stops working and I buy something none garmin.

  • My Garmin HRM Pro(+) also triggers a notification on the watch when it connects.

  • Does it notify when HRM disconnects?

  • HRM disconnecting in the middle of the activity is so rare that I honestly cannot remember. Slight smile

  • It doesn't, which is part of the problem. I had this happen to me twice.
