my max heart rate was updated even it doesnt reached max zone

Hi, why my max hr was updated to 192,( previuosly was 191), even it doesnt reached >170 during my run? Im using also garmin hrm pro plus strap

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it is based on HRV data.

  • because the "Auto Max HR detection" is enabled, and this feature is trying to guess your max hr from the HRV data and its FirstBeat data library. the funny thing that when my measured maxHR was 182 during the activity, it gave me 181 as predicted maxHR (after many wrong predictions, i turned off as i turned off the FTP detection also, that is also low in my case)

  • mm, thought, that "Auto Max HR detection" just logs your max HR during exercise and sets it as the HR max value..

  • yeah, it worked like that in the past with older Garmin units, but i assume since the 955 and Edge x40 series it works with this new method.

  • Garmin doesn't publish how the newer Max HR detection algorithm works. and there are several papers online that discuss different methods.

One paper of interest is this one, which mention researchers familiar with the Firstbeat team. So that might be a hint that this is the method used here.

It combines age with the HRV high frequency power to get to a r correlation value of 0.5 that denotes a pretty good linear correlation (generally value above 0.7 are considered good).

Who knows? Maybe this is the type of algorithm that has been implemented, or maybe a more complex algorithm?
