Forerunner 955 vs 965 in 2024

I read almost all reviews, watched almost all youtube videos, read almost all threads about both watches, but want to hear your thoughts in 2024.

Will be 965 supported by Garmin updates for longer period? (For now they use almost same firmware base, with same features)

Is 955 non-solar worth buying for 200€ less than 965?

Experiences from users that owned both watches?

Thanks on comments.

  • Hi burns3,

I personally don't have any experience with the golf activity on the watch. However, the 955 and 965 are software wise identical.

  • Hello all, I ended up by ordering 955 for good price (380€) on online store (https://www.lepape.com/en-gb/garmin-forerunner-955-noire-black).
I can post about my judgement after a few days of use.

P.S. - I had Forerunner 255 for almost 1.5 year but I send it to Garmin under warranty due to a barometer failure - got new one, and sold it for good price, so I decided to make this change.

Thanks to everyone for the comments on this topic!

  • My old fenix6 lasts about 11 days (advertised up to 14 in smartwatch mode, and it's 2 years older than the fr965) with my usual usage pattern. I expect the newer fr965 that is advertised "Up to 23 days in smartwatch mode"  with similar usage pattern to hold at least 11 days if not more but instead it holds about 5 days. This is because Garmin is kind of faking it by advertising numbers with the display off 95% of the time. I don't think that the gesture is smart enough on either of these devices to call it "smart" so for me smart "watch" mode means when I use it as a watch (and not use it for activity recording that understandably uses more battery). However for me "watch" (smart or dumb) means that I look at the watch and I see at least the time and hour. With these parameters the fenix6 can be used 11 days and the fr965 only five days, because in order to be able to see the time on fr965 it needs to be in AOD, because the crappy gesture detection. That's it. I bought the fenix6 exactly 2 years ago for $400, and the fr965 half a year ago for $600.
