Should I upgrade to Forerunner 965 from Venu 3 for the training stuff?

I am very happy with my Venu 3 and also use an Edge Explore 2 on my bikes. I do a mix of Zwift on indoor bike plus outdoor cycling on three different bikes, plus various other workouts like calisthenics, weights, etc.

Right now I use the HRV, and the various things I can get from Intervals.icu to plan and adjust my load. I'm pretty happy with this approach but...

I'm wondering whether I should try to upgrade my Garmin gear to get the benefit of the Garmin training load, status, effect, etc.

If I understand it correctly, to get the benefit of training effect for all my activities, I'd have to upgrade both my watch and my head unit. Activities from Zwift should be fine (with the update from last year for Zwift activities into Garmin Connect and training load, etc.).

Note: I am sending power readings to Zwift but on my outdoor bikes I don't have power meters, and unless some really great new lower-cost option comes to market, I'm never going to have power meters on all three bikes. I can run HR2VP, which while I know is not going to be as accurate, is still better than nothing.

I think if I was to upgrade my watch I'd likely go for the FR965. I don't really need the mapping and navigation but my old eyes find it hard enough to read the 1.4" screen and going to a smaller screen on the 265 would be a step backwards.

  • No need to get rid of your Explore if you log the rides with the watch and use the Edge just for routing, maps etc?

    Do your "indoor bike" have a power meter and do you use it regularly? Then I see no point of having power meter on the other bikes.

  • Yeah, and riding outdoors logging with the watch will give you training load etc even without power meters. And if your indoor bike have power a 965 can connect to that giving you FTP, VO2 max etc.

  • If you only use it for cycling then I'm not sure if you would gain much. If you also run, then probably.

    I recently upgraded a fenix6 to firerunner965, mainly because the Fenix died, but the reasons I chose fr965 over some other model were:

    Light weight (with fenix6 it was heavily when I ran)

    AMOLED display (which I'm not sure if it was a good decision, if I would chose now then maybe I would get a fr955.

    You mentioned your eyes and I can understand that. Especially for that reason I use the watchface "40+", and there might be advantages also having an AMOLED display in that regard. But I hate that I have to touch my watch to see the time. There is a gesture that works only 50 percent of the time when I want to look at the time, and sometimes when I read in the bed it repeatedly turns it on even though I didn't mean to.

    I haven't use the maps or the music yet, not sure if I ever will.

  • Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah I'm very much still on the fence about this as I think the gains are marginal given the upgrade cost. Especially as I know some people find the training status, etc. to be less than accurate.

    I would love it if they came out with even larger AMOLED displays. 

  • Personally for me, I can barely see the MIPS displays and need the brightness of AMOLED. The smaller the text, the more I need the brightness to compensate if I’m not wearing glasses. You should configure your watch to show the time in the always-on display. I have mine configured so it shows time, date, and watch battery in always-on and then a ton more information when the display is fully activated.

  • I personally find training load estimation, which combines all types of activities I do, to be very useful. Even if my training load is dominated by cycling ;-) Having the watch compute the acute to chronic load ratio is also helpful to make sure you're on the right path. This is what I would be missing most if I lost my 965. Training readiness is a somewhat helpful signal, but I don't find it critical - I think my resting heart rate is as good, if not a better indicator :-) Training focus is OK, just don't read too much into it, at least unless you're without a plan and completely off in some area. I am not sure if anything else really matters to me. In particular I find training effect to be pretty much junk. Better pick a reasonable training plan and trust it. With some training plans (esp. the more intense ones) the training status and VO2 max are like a roller coaster, but my fitness objectively improves through metrics like FTP or speed - so I just learned to ignore those ;-) Of course general health tracking, esp. sleep, and smartwatch features, like notifications, are useful - but that you also have on your Venu 3.

    For measuring outdoor power with multiple bikes get power metering pedals like Rally. With the right tools you'll be moving them between bikes in no time (I also have three that I am riding regularly).

  • I appreciate the detailed info on which parts of the additional training info you find to be useful. Yes in theory it only takes a few minutes to swap pedals between bikes but I worry that constantly threading and unthreading pedals every day is not going to be great for them (or cranks) in the long term. Also, two of the bikes run flat pedals and the other is clipless.

  • If you use some grease on threads as recommended I personally wouldn't worry too much. Surely they will wear over time, but don't they wear anyway like most bike parts? My Rallies are scratched like *** at this point, but at least they don't squeak (too much) ;-)

    For turning Rallies XC into flat pedals you can use adapters. I use https://www.mozartt.com/product/senza. The plastic could be a bit tougher, as I already broke one of those in rough terrain. I might have hit a rock, but not in an extreme manner, probably when pushing the bike. They also wear somewhat quickly - scratches appear while studs disappear :-) But hey, they don't cost a fortune, just order two or three pairs in advance ;-)
