Courses and Turn by Turn not always working

I've been running into an issue on my 965 where I don't always get turn-by-turn information on courses. I will see the map just fine and can navigate via looking at the highlighted roads which follow the course, but I don't always get the chimes to alert me to a turn, nor see the enlarged arrows that usually appear on the map to instruct turns.  I think this seems to happen more often when I'm using a course that I originally created in Strava, but it has happened with courses created on Connect as well.  When using the watch itself to create the course (either "Return to Start" or the in-built course creator) the turn by turn instructions seem to work fine.  I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not.

Anyone run into this issue?

  • I experienced this last night when I decided to follow a course in reverse!

  • Creating a course on the watch doesn't even get turn by turn notifications working for me

  • I tend to find courses created in Strava and imported across can be incredibly hit and miss. The number of times I have continued down a straight road, to be notified I am off course because I should have taken a left are a few too many. However, when i have used the Garmin connect app or the site, the courses have always given me the turn notifications. Do you have the option for turn alerts turned off in the route creator?

  • I use the watch to make routes, one of the main reasons for buying it, and it simply doesn't work for me. I've reset the watch, toggled everything off and back on and no luck

  • I can’t really get my finger behind it, but I do miss quite a few notifications. Not per se tbt notifications, but during activities I don’t always get the autolap notification and I do miss notifications of whatsapp messages during normal use.

But I really can’t tell if I miss the notifications because they are not there or I miss them because the vibrations are pretty weak and the beep isn’t that loud (compared to my old forerunner 935)

It does seem that autolap notifications (for every 1k in my case) stop after 10k, and sometimes start again after 15k.

  • Yep, this is a known bug on Garmin routing that dates back to the Edge 1000 and earlier. If the route you use has turn-by-turn instructions embedded in it then you’ll get them as expected, but it doesn’t have the horsepower to actually handle the routing itself other than over a very short / simple route.

So instead it just overlays the course line on the map to get you there instead (I don’t know whether it continues to try to calculate in the background, but I suspect not).

  • This is really interesting.  Is it known which mapping apps do/don't embed the turn-by-turn info into their outputs?  If Strava doesn't, who does?  I personally don't care for the stock Connect course builder as it's always a little bit unresponsive for me. I'll use it but would prefer something else.  I'm wondering if other apps like MapMyRide or Komoot, are known to include the turn-by-turn when downloading to a Garmin device?

  • Gpx files don’t have tbt instructions. Only fit files do.

If you load a gpx files via garmin connect, garmin connect will add tbt instructions and convert it to a fit file.

  •  RideWithGPS allows you to export .fit and .tcx files (both of these have turn-by-turn info).  I export .fit files from my RideWithGPS account to my Garmin watch and get turn-by-turn guidance. The .tcx files are good for exporting to my Wahoo bike computer.
