Best configuration for satellite options?

I'm upgrading from 945->965 and am curious about the experience with options such as SATIQ. One of my peeves with all of the Garmins I've had  is the inability to reconcile inaccuracies in pace based on GPS data with cadence and stride length.

I'm not sure the 965 will solve that problem, but I'd be happy if it did. But for now, I'd really like to mitigate the pace/distance error that occurs when passing under an obstruction (like a freeway underpass).

I found this article that gives me hope for increased accuracy - but still, the question remains about whether or not to select SATIQ. (And when I ask that question, I'm thinking, "OK, it supposedly selects the best satellite config for given conditions - but, can it do it quickly enough to address/mitigate the transient issue transiting a freeway underpass).

Thanks!

  • I use the maximum all + multi-band , Sat IQ didn't seem to significantly improve battery life in my view.

Make sure 3D pace and 3D distance are off

If using an external make sure pace and distance are INDOOR omly

  • I think it all boils down to how much and what kind of accuracy you need, and choose the mode depending on that. For example, I personally use all + multiband for running, because that tends to give best "almost, but not quite" instant pace for most purposes. But, when I'm cycling (which I don't do that much), I just use SatIQ, because with cycling speeds the GPS errors are relatively much smaller than with running anyway. While hiking, I would love to use just GPS as my setting (to conserve power on multi-day hikes), but the truth is that in a forest the accuracy of just GPS doesn't cut it (at least here north, in Finland), the watch may loose the signal constantly. So for hiking I've ended up using all systems (without multiband), because I couldn't care less for my instant pace while hiking.

(And I think I now the thinking process you are going through, I did the same when upgrading from my old Fenix 5+ to 965 earlier this year.)

  • I can just give you my 2 cents. I went from 935 to 965 and I am very happy with the GPS.

I run, I hike, I climb and use different options.

I have tried different settings for the same activity and found little differences. I either use all or SatIQ, always multiband. It is much better as with the 935. Between the 2 I found little difference in accuracy, though.

I would always go for the "best" option if pace is important in your activity. When hiking I would think about the location. Are there trees, is there a mountain wall, canyon, boulders etc. next to you? In those cases I would go for max. If you are hiking open field with little obstacles even GPS only would fit the purpose if you need the battery.

  • Keep your 945 and buy a stryd.

gps cannot give you accurate pace, but a footpod can. And stryd is the best footpod you can buy.
