Respect pace on training plan, how to?

Hi guys, I am running training plan downloaded from Garmin.

Open sky (so I can't say poor gps coverage), here an example:

- running 100m, 6:30 to 7:00 minute/km

- 100m. 6:00 to 6:30 minute/km

And so on...

I start running, then pace indicator shows me I'am too slow for many seconds, I increase pace, still too slow (red zone).

Then suddenly "too fast", red zone.

Decreasing pace, still too fast.

Decreasing again, pace near green zone, but still to fast

Decreasing again, slightly: too slow.

100m has ended, new target pace....

At the end my training is "30%".

Such a big delay between current speed and gps detected speed.

How can I solve? Some 965 setting or sholud I edit training plan (let's say increasing distance to 200 meters)?

Thanks.

  • I had the same on 945. Now on 965 there is no such error.

  • Unfortunately, speed isn't easily measured with GPS over short distances.

Because the interval is brief, I would personally try an run at a pace you feel is in the zone through the entire interval - and adjust the speed up or down for subsequent efforts.

In time, you should have a much better understanding of the effort required to reach a target pace.

(If it's really bothering you, change the workouts to HR instead of pace)

  • This is something of a bug I saw on the FR 945. The Garmin gives enough range for the target pace and maybe even calculates the average pace. Holding the target zone is quite easy.

  • I unfortunately have the same issue.  I understand measurement error in the gps signal and such a small distance traveled every second, but it will take up to 30 seconds for the watch to show new pace correctly on my 965.  The whole time telling me I'm not running fast enough only to finally shoot way past the new pace set point and have to slow down and hope I'm in the window for the next 20-30 seconds while it updates again.  The update of the pace is really slooooow.  So slow that when I'm speeding up running down hill the pace stated on the watch is still going up from me running up the other side.  My older 935 did not do this.  I also had older units, maybe Garmin, that would let me select the time the watch averages the pace (down to 3 seconds average if I can remember correctly).  That would be much more useful for this type of workout, but will jump around a little for a long steady run.
