Vertical Ratio and Ground Contact Time without chest strap or pod?

Hi All-

Just purchased a Forerunner 965 and have done two runs with it. I don't use a chest strap or pod (though I do use a Polar OH1 optical sensor on my right bicep) yet somehow I'm seeing both Vertical Ratio and Ground Contact Time data for both runs in Connect. How is the possible without a supported sensor and how valid is the data?

  • Thanks for the heads up on this. Should have just gone directly to the DCRainmaker site. Frustratingly the online manual for the 965 still says: "For all six running form metrics, you must pair your Forerunner watch with the HRM-ProTm series accessory or other running dynamics accessory that measures torso movement." You'd think they'd update that.

  • I think it's the "Ground contact time balance" which requires a pod. If you look at the table on the help page they all say "Sensor Type: Watch or compatible accessory", except the GCT Balance which is "Compatible accessory only"

  • Which has better data resolution, and which uses less watch power?

  • I suspect there's not much power usage difference between watch running dynamics and strap/pod dynamics. But I have personal experience that at least HRM Pro+ provides better quality (which is to be expected, as its accelerometer is fixed to your torso, not at the end of a swinging limb).

    But the main thing is that regardless of quality, wrist running dynamics, pod running dynamics, and strap running dynamics provide somewhat different figures for vertical oscillation. And that's also to be expected because they measure it at different parts of your body. So the important thing is to realize that you cannot compare the results if they come from a different source. (Just like with power measurements.)
