Best practice when using bike computer?

So, I use and log all my bike rides on my Edge 1030+ and have power meters on several bikes and the trainer. Outdoor rides works very well, the watch triggers move IQ and the wrist pulse is almost spot on compared to the 1030+ and its connected strap.

But for indoor rides that never works due to lack of movement I guess, and I've never seen correct pulse on the watch... So far I've then just started a random activity such as cardio to make it pick up the pulse, and then discarded it at the end.

Is that the correct way to go, or would it be better to just take the watch off during indoor rides and let the watch do it's calculations afterwards based on physio true up?

  • I guess it depends what you are looking for. I tried different approaches and it depends.

    - If you care about reasonable training readiness view, then I think you can just record activities on the Edge and ignore your Forerunner. Edge will determine the exercise and training load, Forerunner will measure sleep, HRV, etc. IQ activities do not seem to impact the metrics I care about and in my case rarely overlap with recorded activities.

    - If you care about 24/7 recording of your HR, then you can start your activity also on Forerunner, but then discard it at the end. Forerunner is then likely to record valid HR and as far as I can tell exercise and training load is properly computed. It's a bit annoying to manage, but can also serve as a backup if your Edge loses the activity during recording - it happened a couple of time to me.

    - You can record the activity on both and clean up double activities or let them be. According to DCR who records the same activity on a ton of devices in parallel, syncs it all to GC, and does not care to clean this up afterwards, the training load is good nevertheless. But totals are completely messed up in this case.

  • I'm always leaving my watch to charge while cycling. Because Edge is gathering everything to Garmin Connect. Physio true up is also synced with Edge no problems here. In my opinion it's not necessary to wear the watch while recording with Edge. Heart rate is also updated in GC when you wear a HRM.

  • Do you have an Edge 1040, or older?

  • So, an hour ago I took the watch off while registering a short indoor ride on my 1030+, but then got gaps in daily heart rate diagram. Can you confirm that is not the case for you using a 1040?

  • Here an example for Monday:

I had a similar problem like you had. I guess you are using Garmin HRM strap? Please do the following after a ride, open the Garmin Connect Mobile app and keep the HRM strap on, this must be synced also. In my case I could see that the HRM strap was not correctly registered. It helped to remove the HRM strap from the app and register it again. After that I always see my strap as connected and I have no gaps. The small gap here in my day is the shower ;)

  • Ok thanks, but using an old HRM dual (?) for indoor rides, so no cache on that one.
I guess I’ll just continue to wear the watch and start some random activity to discard…

  • Oh yes this must be the case than. Almost Christmas, time for an upgrade ;)
