Guided Lactate Threshold test inaccurate results

Hello,

i did a guidded lactate threshold test and in my opinion the results cannot be true.

test says: HR 162 Pace 4:29 /km

from the HR and Pace charts i cannot see that i reached 4:29/km with a 162 bpm. Not even close. With 162 bpm i was at 5:20 /km region.

Do you think there is some settings to adjust ?

My Max HR is correct at 187 bpm.

  • When you do ramp tests, it is important to keep a steady pace. From the chart, it looks like there is a significant drop off in pace during all the intervals. Now that you have an idea of the test, try to do it again, after a couple of days of rest, with steady pace intervals.

  • To give you an idea of what a successful test looks like, here’s one I did recently: share.icloud.com/.../06bsm4ZFkjo-AjQ3eGmXLH4hw

  • See here if that helps also. Performing the test with pace targets will be easier and more accurate.

  • Hello,

Thank you for your Help. I followed your suggestion. I know there should be more days in between a lactate thresholf test, but i have only now time for it. I did it again.

I did it with a more ramp like ramp looking pace and HR.

I have the same problem. The Results make no sense in my opinion.

4:29 /km is my VO2 max pace, if i look at the chart. Why Garmin says my LT Pace is 4:29 /km ? its way too fast.

  • 4:29 /km is my VO2 max pace, if i look at the chart.

Are you trying to associate a point in time HR to a pace? If yes, this would be a wrong conclusion.

If 4.29/km is your VO2 Max pace it would mean, approximately, that if you ran 10mn at 4.29/km steady, you would run to complete exhaustion.

Why Garmin says my LT Pace is 4:29 /km

    Well, I could understand why you ask the question based on your assumption for your Vo2 Max pace. So I see it as a rhetorical question;

    its way too fast

It is still possible that the test failed, for sure. If you don't think you can run 4:17min/km during 20mn, then yeah... the test didn't work.

Note: I came to 4:17 by converting 4:29 to a speed, dividing that speed by 0.95, and converting the result back to a pace.

  • I could never run 20 minutes near as 4:17 at all in my current form.

Thank you, but why is the estimated LT Pace so off?

I did the test just like described correctly. I was in the zone of the guided test all the time.

What else can I do to make it accurate?

  • May I ask where you get this screenshot from?

The lactate threshold results are in Garmin Connect mobile, under performance > Lactate Treshold. I couldn't reproduce that screenshot on Garmin Connect Web either.

  • My previous screenshot is from the website of connect.

This one is from mobile connect. I still don't know how to get a correct LT result with the guided test :/

  • Yep, the results are legit and copacetic: Your LTHR is about 90% of your HR Max, which is the typical ratio for trained runners. Your pace graph looks normal across the workout.

i can think of only 2 reasons why the results might be too optimistic:

    - your HR Max is too high. If the watch is looking for some HRV impact corroborated by typical % of HR Max, an erroneous HR Max could throw the algorithm off,

    - your pace is systematically optimistic. This could happen if your are using a pace device that would be not calibrated (been there, done that)

Maybe other users have other suggestions.

You might want to contact Garmin support to fix the watch.

Other than that, you can still do a field threshold test as described above (the 20mn thing), set your zones manually and train happily after.

  • Thank you!

My max HR is correct within +-1 BPM ( measured with HRM Pro Plus after field test.

I track my pace with forerunner 965 in satiq Mode. GPS seems very accurate when I look at the map.

I really would appreciate if it would be possible to adjust the LT Pace in Garmin Connect. It's not possible to do manually ( only LT HR is possible).

I want to have that LT Pace correct for my daily suggested workouts.
