How to measure the number of steps in Hiking mode?

How to measure the number of steps in Hiking mode? I went hiking last weekend. I covered  about 10 km and 13,000 steps and my Garmin watch, forerunner 965, recorded my step count as 12,000. This means my stride length was about 0.83m during the hike. But my stride length is about 0.6m when walking on flat ground. It doesn't make sense that I would maintain a 0.75m stride length while ascending an 850m mountain. typically, stride length tends to decrease when climbing a mountain. Additionally, when I checked the cadence records, there were quite a few segments recorded as '0.' I hope there will be a quick fix for this.

Currently, in the smart watch market, Samsung has the best hardware, Apple has the best software. However, I thought that Garmin is the highest technological prowess and accuracy in the outdoor sports watch market. But I have come to realize that Garmin is not the best, neither on hardware nor in software. Apple and Samsung don't even announce unverified features. I hope they provide proper features, even if it takes a bit longer.

  • I'm intrigued to know how you know you took 13k steps, did you use a different device for this? Where in the Forerunner or the Connect app are you seeing that you took 12k steps during the activity - when I look I cannot see steps as a stat in either Run, Walk or Hike.

  • i used forerunner 965 only. this provide steps for whole day.

  • Just to verify: Did you use hiking poles on any part of your hike? If you use a pole in the same hand as the watch, and don't move the pole for every step, the watch will get incorrect swing information from your arm. (Since we don't have any real mountains in Finland where I live, I've switched to carrying just one hiking pole, and when I use it for additional support in difficullt terrain, I carry it in my other hand.)

I'm not saying this is what caused what you experienced, just wondering if it could be.

  • Thank you for your reply. But I don't want to know reason and the process and algorithm. >I wnat to lnow why Garmin watch has incorrect data that  Samsung watch and Apple watch can do. My wife has Samsung and my friend who went with me has Apple watch.

  • Ok, then you'd better speak to Garmin support instead of asking here at a mostly end user forum. I was just trying to help.
