VO2 decreasing rapidly since moving to FR965

Since I changed my Garmin forerunner from 945 to 965 my VO2 max has decreased rapidly. From 50 to 43 within 6 months.

Every run has indicated that it’s not productive which is absolute garbage.

it’s making me lose confidence and am about to throw it away.

I’ve used two different HR straps for my runs and nothing has changed.

  • I have the same, I moved from 245 to 965 and my vo2max drop from 55-54 to 50-51.but on the other hand race predictor comes close to my real finishing times. Maybe there is a problem with x4x series for vo2max calculation not in x6x series.

  • Have you checked that your maximum HR has been set correctly on the 965?

  • You are very lucky and belongs to a very small number of users, whose VO2 changes at all. Mine is constant, for some 2 years now. Meanwhile I had long periods when I trained my ass of, and long resting periods.

No changes at all. Not a single digit.

    Be proud!

  • My previous watch, a forerunner 935 higly overcalculated vo2max. Specially when I do high intensity intervals, I could get vo2max over 60. According to tests in a sport medical center and from coopertests, it should be more like 53.

My new watch, a 965 is more conservative in it’s calculation and now it is 56. Still to high. But to be honest, I don’t look a lot at the data my watch guestimates. If at all.

I guess for your watch it’s the same. The algorithms on your 945 contained flaws and on your 965 there are other flaws.

Just do a coopertest from time to time. Must better than garmins guestimation.

  • also GPS is less accurate on 945 so distance calculations are not the same and therefore less precise.

  • errors in distance due to gps inaccuracies as cause of vo2max errors? I find that hard to believe.

I know the gps chip in the 945 was chosen for battery efficiency and not accuracy and garmin was struggling with it, but it’s not like there was a big difference in length. Maybe a 10k was reported as 10,5k or 9.5k. It’s not that 10k suddenly became 15k

Besides that, vo2max is more increased by hr drops after an interval. So, if you would want to blame a sensor for to high vo2max, better look at the heartrate sensor that might report too high hr during interval (due to cadence lock) and at rest quickly drops to lower heartrate. High drop in hr indicates good condition and garmins algorithm translate that in high vo2max.

Just use a more proven methode in stead of garmin algorithm mumbo jumbo

  • I had the same issue.  645 said 56 and I’m now at 52.

Linked another poster has said, my estimated times look fairly accurate.  The number is steady and hasn’t changed for a few months.

I am not sure but I run and go to the gym and use my watch for both.  I am not sure if this skews the training somewhat.

I have weeks where I go hardcore on my running and the watch always shows as maintaining fitness.  It’s pretty odd behaviour.  I can o my assume the algorithm changed and is less likely to increase the figure without some really hardcore training.
