16.17 Black Screen after power-off or restart

After restart or power-off/power-on, there is no black screen. My phone seems connected from garmin connect, optical hrm's green lights works and I can see HR in phone. But as I said screen is black.

I have to hold power button to activate emergency to make screen work again or connect to computer than screen comes back when the watch's storage is mounted in computer.

I did full-reset and there is no change. BTW after full reset, I had to hold power button to activate emergency again. Bu in this time I can not finish first setup and screen is still black.

Emegency "Set up Asistance..." message comes and then screen black again. Pc connection does not bring screen back too.

My watch is only 1-week year old :). this is very bad start up,

Any suggestion fix it up?

  • I managed to open up screen with pc connection and garmin express sync. But despite all soft and hard resets, there is still black screen issue.Whenever I restart the watch, dispaly remains black till I hold light button to activate "Assistance" or re-connect to pc.

    BTW this issue seems software problem, well is there a way re-update with current or previous firmware file? I cannot find to download firmware files.

  • Which firmware version are you running? It's a known issue with current beta firmware.

  • Hi Chihat. My understanding is that 16.17 was beta but is now the official current firmware. Regarding the black screen issue, I also have it too and found this forum a few days ago where Garmin have responded. But it was reported ages ago and we're still waiting for an update to drop to fix it.

  • There are several crashing and black screen issues with 16.17. I can not see calibration info while calibrating compass, or if select/deselect battery perc. in power manager settings from phone GC, the watch will crash/restart,...

    This is my 3. garmin watch and the oldies were not buggy like 965. Shame on you garmin Slight smile

  • Agreed. I have the same issues too. Just patiently waiting for the next beta of public firmware release and hoping that’ll fix the problem.

     and , can you confirm that the issue only occurs when you power the device on? After you force the Emergency Assistance alert to appear and cancel it, does the watch seem normal? Or, is the watch also crashing/rebooting outside of powering the device on?

    We are aware of both of these disruptions and are still investigating. If you grant me permission to reach out via email, I can add you to the correct report. 

  • Hi , that's right. Just like it's been reported elsewhere, it's when powering the device on and during the ABC calibration process. I haven't come across any other issues that have been reported elsewhere, though I haven't been wearing it full time since this latest firmware update since I swap between watches pretty frequently. But I'll wear it full time from now and report anything further.

    Do you have an update on when we can expect the next firmware update?

  • When power on, yes the issue is here. As you Said, after emergency ass. the watch works normally.

    But if I change battery percentage from Garmin Connect, watch crashes and blue triangle section appears then I have to apply emergency ass. process.

  • With Beta v18.12 the issue is fixed for me. How is it for you?
