Why bother upgrade to 965

I’ve been a 945 owner for probably around 3 years now and love the idea of upgrading to the 965. Disappointingly though, the truth is I’d be paying a lot of money for being a beta testing Guinea pig for the foreseeable future - that would be an extremely frustrating prospect! Why are Garmin so adamant about releasing so many new models when they are clearly unable to accommodate proper functional testing before releasing to the public and loyal customers. The way I see it, Garmin should be paying us for testing until they have a software version fit for public use!

  • Have an upvote to balance out the downvote. How dare you be happy with what you bought?!

I too am happy with my 965 and have had no problems with it. Unlike a lot of people here I understand that having a watch-sized programable electronic device will have glitches and bugs. Nothing is ever perfect. That is why every programable device has updates; Microsoft, Apple, Garmin, every other device.

  • So I paid 650 euro for a watch and should keep my mouth shut about issues with it? Just accept it and go on?

It’s not only the huge number of fixes. It’s also how garmin handles them. Or not handles them.

I participated in the beta testing. So I took the risk and invested time to make the watch better.I reported bugs in the correct way. Did garmin fix those? No.

I also reported numerous bugs directly to garmin support. Often their rection was that I should sent them to an email address thet is for giving product suggestions. Some kind of black hole. They also offered  to replace my watch when I report software problems. When I say that replacing hardware doesn’t solve software problems they say they cannot do something about that.

It is also frustrating that the same feature works on other watches while on the 865 is doesn’t.

It’s very good possible that with your usage you don’t encounter bugs. Or you don’t mind bug. But others do.

  • I’m glad that there are people happy with their 965. It’s an extremely attractive and feature rich watch. You can see a lot of effort has gone into design and development but like every other Garmin it is let down by extremely poor testing and prod support. You only have to look at the other forums like Venu 3 to see this.

Garmin clearly do not have the capacity to support all live models in order to identify defects and implement timely fixes. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was only one dev and testing team that rotates their attention to models in cycles. That is just not good enough.

  • Good to know mate, thanks. I recognise you from the 945 forum.

  • Yeah it is a bit of a bummer isn’t it. I tend to suffer a lot of ectopic/pvc beats which it would be useful to record.

965 doesn’t have the hardware to support ecg. The new Elevate v5 sensor does and is featured on the Venu 3 and newest Fenix/Epix models. I think this is down to the manufacturing timeline so I’d expect to see an upgraded Pro version released - the question is whether I can be patient and wait until then!

  • Coming from the Fenix series (had a 6 Pro Titanium), apart from the oled display, it seems like a downgrade. Fenix was regularly updated and seemed to get flagship treatment. 965 is getting base model treatment

  • Ya I have to agree on this one.

Even though the FR 965 is essentially as feature rich as the Fenix7/Epix2 series, but at 60% of the price, it seems the support level is a lot less.

I also come from nearly every model of Fenix and an Epix2, and when there was ever a physical issue such as scratches or weird behavior which didn't happen often, it was essentially a watch replacement with almost no questions asked.

A few dots have appears on the glass of my FR 965, and its been weeks and Garmin still insist I soak it and wash it with detergent, sheesh, I think I will give up on it.

  • Get a TPU Supershieldz screen protector, and make sure you apply it correctly. I got mine perfect in the first try. I was able to push a handful of super tiny air-bubbles to the edge of the screen, which then just disappated after one warm wash.

  • I've had a 945 LTE for 20 months I use to run, bike, row, yoga, strength. I am very pleased with the way it is working for me. I am very interested in a 965, but my 945 is working so well I hate to mess with it

Before that I used a Polar Vantage V2, and I still try to keep using it. I like Polar Flow's Tolerance / Strain concept, it is easy to understand. I like the simplicity of the Flow UI and data.

If you're mostly a runner you'll probably be ok with a V3. I'm Not going to buy any more Polar. They do not support any ANT+ or BT bike trainer / smart trainers that I've used. I easily connected Garmin to everything. I have my Concept 2 RowERG PM5 connected as a smart trainer and get All the data.

The Polar watch screen configuration is far simpler and limited. With Garmin you can setup about any data screen you can think of. It's also nice to setup the same Activity multiple ways like I have a Run Race with just the few screens I want to see running a race. Polar not as good.

The DCR review of the V3 points out the ECG just gives you the chart, it makes no attempt to analyze the wave and point out problems like AFib.

The Venu is a far simpler watch than a Forerunner. It has limits like 4 dats screens with just 3 or 4 fields. It's also missing many FR features a runner would want. It seems more appealing to a FitBit user that wants more smart watch features.

My dream would be to see a to PRO 965 come out with the new V5 sensor and the Epix software / features. But the 965 is so new that's unlikely.... Garmin is releasing a LOT of watches so it's possible. I don't want the Epix as  its too big, I like the FR size.

I'll probably buy the 965. I recently met someone that is loving the 965. They're a marathon runner with a 58 VO2 that is pegged at the top of Superior so I know they are really using it. The $600 it's not that much it change my life if it didn't work out.

  • I've had the 965 since launch.  before that everything from the FR201.  Recently the 630, 745, 945LTE , 955 and now the 965. I am mainly a runner , similar in fitnesss to the type of person you mentioned , I am 60YO. I used to have a AW 3,4,5 ,6 and use my FR just for running, now I use it all the time. The AW had ECG and one used it mostly for "fun"I guess, even when I had Lyme Carditis recently it didn't highlight anything really.

I really enjoy the 965 , sure some things could be added and be better but that is the same with everything.. Garmin has added features since I got mine and the bugs are largely sorted for my use case.

Here is something I did when In got the watch, if it is of interest.

I've adjusted to the AMOLED, I use it without AOD in general.
