ANT+ loses connection every lap

So basically I did a 10k easy run using the run profile and the watch lost contact with my HRM and stryd every new auto lap, reconnects after half a minute or so. Shows as spikes of lost data in both graphs. What's going on here? Known bug? I'm new to this watch. Not sure if it's auto lap related per se, didn't try without it yet.

  • Were you in the same location every time they disconnected?

  • I have exactly the same issue with my Forerunner245. This happens with both Ant+ & Bluetooth connections. I had been using an old TomTom Bluetooth strap and upgraded to a Polar H10 thinking that the latest tech plus Ant+ would solve the problem. It did not. Every time a lap alarm - or any other alert that uses the buzzer and vibration - is triggered, the connection drops out and reconnects maybe 30 seconds or so later. This is visible in real time, looking at the watch face ... heart rate field is blank as long as the alarm is sounding, then reconnects as soon as it stops. BTW this happens with every type of activity - outdoor workouts that use GPS, and indoor workouts like cardio and treadmill that do not.

  • Luckily this behaviour has stopped, don't know what happened, or stopped happening. Maybe it was just a firmware update.

  • Still going on for me. It happened again yesterday. This is the only discussion I've found that addresses the problem. I'm glad it stopped for you. The behavior is not the end of the world, but it's really annoying in an expensive piece of tech.

  • Well you did what I would've done: switched one side of the equation (H10), and proved that that side alone can't be the problem. The next thing logically would be to test both the old and the new HRM with another device. My guess is that then both would work. Now if you have a way to test it, then do it. If not then if I were you I'd contact Garmin ASAP, though given you have a fr245, probably it's out of warranty already. But my gutt tells me the problem is probably with the 245

  • Re: warranty, not only is it an old watch, but I bought it used, which I am pretty sure voids any customer service.  It's been a good device for me, especially since I have more confidence in the heart rate numbers since I got the H10.  The wrist HR is not totally worthless, but generally works best in low impact running or walking situations that involve steady effort.  Wrist HR is pretty slow to respond to effort changes, such as intervals, compared to an ECG chest strap.  Anyhow, my solution to the dropout problem was simply to disable the lap alerts! I don't have another device to check the other side of the equation. But yeah ... I think you're right.  Logic tells me that the problem is with the FR245.

    Thanks for sharing your insight!

I'd be curious to hear if this is an issue with Garmin models other than the Forerunner series ... also how prevalent this problem is.

  • which I am pretty sure voids any customer service

No. I wouldn't think so. As long as you have a receipt. Unless you are in some "unusual" registration.

  • Hm ... perhaps I should reach out to customer support, just to see what would happen.  But this was an ebay purchase from "Electronics Warehouse' on Oct 30, 2020 ... registered with Garmin on Nov 5, 2020.  So no ... no 'unusual registration', just a legit online purchase, which I feel was a good transaction.  This has been the only issue so far, and I got what I thought was a pretty good price for this watch.  As I understand it, the FR245 was released in 2019, so the watch was a year or so old when I bought it (maybe).  I think the ad said it had one previous owner.  I also bought a one-year warranty from Square Trade, which of course is long expired ... and it appears that 'Electronics Warehouse' has vanished from ebay.  I don't think they were fly-by-night, just the relatively short life-spans of ebay stores.  I can't complain ... the FR245 continues to function really well.  But yeah, not purchased from an 'authorized Garmin dealer'.
