Daily workout suggestions changing to base daily

Recently upgraded to the latest firmware.

I've a target race pencilled into it for 3 weeks from now and until recently the workouts have been varied as they usually have been.

However since the firmware upgrade (may be coincidental) the workout for the day is different than what it was suggesting the day before.

So for example the next 4 days it's suggesting all base runs. However when I checked a couple of days ago and as recently as last night I had a mixture of activities for aerobic and anaerobic with my long run as usual on the weekend. Now even my long run is gone.

My training readiness is moderate but right on the line into the next category up, last night's sleep is fair with a score of 79 but a history of good. Recovery time is low need so I don't understand why it's giving me all base until Wednesday (with today being Friday) being in the Peak Phase of the plan.i

Edit: and today I received the 7 day sleep streak badge for 7 consecutive days of 75 or over.

  • Interesting — has your HRV Status been affected at all? For such a critical part of the recovery metrics, I've heard it can get reset pretty easily.

  • My HRV is constantly balanced. I was thinking today that things might readjust as I gave yesterday's session a miss and training readiness is High and well recovered but still all base lined up until a threshold in 5 days time followed by a recovery.

  • I was about to post a question about the daily suggested workout, and your post made me realize I may have a similar problem.

My problem is as follows. The training load says that anaerobic is in optimal range, high aerobic is below optimal range, and low aerobic is over optimal range. Yet, the daily suggestion for today is to do a base run, although shorter than my usual Saturday run. I found this strange.

Why did I think it might be related to your question? Like you, I find that there is emphasis on base runs in a situation in which I didn't expect it. But, in my case, I can see some threshold run scheduled in the future, so it's not *just* base runs.

In any case, your post made me check if there is any software update: there was one. I'm now on version 14.36. I'll see if anything changes.

It would be really cool if any technical information about how the daily suggestion works would be available. A quick google search (for @garmin algorithm daily suggested workout") doesn't really reveal too much. You can find what inputs are taken into account.

  • Very similar to myself alright, long run days much shorter than previously. As I said in my initial post one day I could see the varied activities pencilled in for the week ahead with a good long run for the weekend, and then the next day a complete revision of the schedule despite the previous day's activity just being a slow base.

I'll run a longer run than usual this weekend and see how things get revised over the coming days. I'm sure it'll suggest a rest day tomorrow if I do so today but maybe it'll give things a virtual kick and mix things up again.

  • What's your acute training load? Is it in the green zone? I only started getting somewhat varied suggestions when my acute load was right.

  • It's in the green at optimal, has been for a while.

  • So an update, I went "rogue" and ran my own long run today and the recommendations for the following week completely changed.

    From tomorrow to Friday...

    Rest day - base - sprint - threshold - recovery - base
