FR935 -> FR965 running physiology whacked

Recently upgraded to FR965 from FR935. Am 59yo male in pretty good shape. had 935 for ~5 years and tracked physio running data. Run or workout ~5x /week workouts generally consist of road runs, trail runs and HIIT functional fitness type of workouts. I'm a bit stunned at how different the physio data is on the 965 for same workouts done while wearing 935. For example a run with 935 might show aerobic at 3.5. same run with 965 shows 5.0. Training status is stuck on "overreaching". To be sure, i took a full two day rest between runs and result was same.  Also, Vo2 with 935 hovered around 46-49. 965 is 45. Max HR dropped from 182 to 177. Is the 965 just going through a learning period and ultimately the physio data will be similar to 935?

  • Since you seem to be well versed in using your watch- I presume that you’ve checked the accuracy of the HR monitor on the new 965?  Is it giving you similar HR for similar intensities?  With no discontinuities?  Does your HR look right?

    when I switched watches- the garmin ‘true-up’ worked perfectly between my devices.  It sounds like perhaps your new watch didn’t receive your training history.  That could certainly be responsible for it telling you you’re overreaching- because it doesn’t think you’ve exercised before.  If that’s the case- then it should eventually all work itself out.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, HR data is similar between 935 and 965. Always wear Garmin strap for all activities. Thats the one thing thats stayed consistent. Just today went for a trail run. With 935, typically would have been a TE of 3.7. 965 was 5.0 and training status, Overreaching.  Training readiness - poor, 60 hours recovery!!! 935 would have been ~20 hrs. Certainly was not that tough of a run.  Definitely think none of my training data on 935 made the move to the 965.

  • This may be too obvious, but have you checked your max HR setting on your 965? Is it the same as on your 935? I think 935 is not (at least fully) compatible with current physio true up, so it's not surprising if all training data was not transferred.

  • Thanks, thats actually a great thought. Yes should be obvious, but no, i have not. Will compare max and zones. Certainly this would explain a lot if 965 values are set lower.

  • The zones shouldn't affect anything except hr presentation. But correct max hr is behind everything in Garmin.
