Does Lactate Threshold Auto-Detect require a chest strap?

Situation: The Owner's Manual for the Forerunner 065 requires a heart rate monitor (chest strap) to perform the Guided Test to Determine Lactate Threshold. The Owner's Mania; also indicates that the 965 has a setting that will automatically allow it to auto-detect lactate threshold. However, the Owner's Manual does not indicate that a chest strap is required to use the auto-detect feature.

Questions:

  • Does anyone know if using the chest strap is required or recommended to use the auto-detect feature? (Hey Garmin: Clarification of this point in the Owner's Manual would be nice.)
  • Have any 965 users who have selected the auto-detect option had their lactate threshold update automatically?
  • If yes, were you wearing a chest strap when the update happened?
