[Request] Suggested workouts by pace- should adjust pace by incline (GAP)

Been playing around with the suggested workouts.  They give me a pace.  And- it has a pretty broad +/- 1min/mi or so allowance before it beeps at you for being too slow or two fast, but doing a trail run with steep ups and downs- it just got really annoying, constantly beeping at me that I was too fast or two slow.  Seems like Garmin could do better here.

  • Yes, garmin is sadly currently very bad at handling elevation in runs. One thing you can do for workouts, is to switch it to "heart rate based", then it will no longer care about pace and distance, and will switch to heart-rate and time. This is much more compatible with trail running.

Sadly the formulas that garmin currently uses to estimate the cost of elevation climbs are very wrong, and often suggest past world-record pace for steep up-hill climbs, so it might be a blessing in disguise that workouts don't come with "Garmin-GAP" option, as that would kill you on the uphills if you followed it :).

There is a whole post about this uphill pacing issue here: forums.garmin.com/.../pacepro-how-broken-is-pace-pro-with-elevation-e-g-trailrunning

  • Yeah- so I switched it to heart based- and have a similar issue. For instance, when just starting, my HR is low… it beeps incessantly.  And this was a zone 1 run.  Got into low to mid z2 HR on hills- was jogging easily, but the hills still raised my HR. Constant annoyance.
