Garmin 965 & Stryd

I am using a 965 with the v2 Stryd sensor (calling current one v3) , I used the Stryd running app (latest version) and interval workouts sync’d from TrainingPeaks.

I am noticing that in TrainingPeaks and Garmin Connect after workouts that there seem to be two different Power graphs in GC (see attachments), one has “IQ” next to it. And in TrainingPeaks it shows one power graph, but the Normalized Power and Average Power are way off in a way that I didn’t see before I upgraded from the 955 to 965 and it suggests to me that a second set of power measurements is mucking up things in TP too.
I know Garmin touts the 965 supports wrist based power measurements, and so I assume this could be a source of the problem - two sources of power data. So I went into the native “Run” activity settings and turned Running Power to “off”. But that didn’t seem to do anything to improve the results on my next recorded run (which is the one I am sharing images of in this email.)
How am I supposed to configure the 965 with Stryd to avoid having conflicting power data, and only have Stryd data for my recorded runs?

  • Are you using a Garmin HRM?  The HRM-Pro (and I believe the Tri) will work as a source of running power.

  • I am typically just using the 965’s wrist based optical HR in this use case now because it’s really quite good at HR it seems.

I am not trying to wean myself off of Stryd. Stryd seems much more useful than Garmin native power because it is super accurate on a treadmill for pace and distance (far better than wrist based tracking via the watch) and it recalculates watts based on an input treadmill incline which Garmin can’t do.

What I am trying to do is turn off the Garmin side not tbt Stryd side.

any else with a 965 and Stryd noticing this problem?

  • Hi

There are indeed two sources of Power in the fitfile if you record a run activity with a 955 or 965 watch if you have the stryd connect IQ datafield for stryd loaded (or use the stryd workout app I guess, but I don't use that).

The one with connectIQ displayed in in garmin connect is the Stryd, the other one listed as "Power" is the power from garmin, which can be from HRM-Pro, HRM-Tri, HRM-Run or the wrist based power (for 955 and 965). I do believe this garmin power field can be disabled if you set "Running Power" to off as in your screenshot for the run activity profile that you use to record the activity, but I personally don't do this - I just let it record both (Garmin and Stryd power).

There is thankfully no "conflict" in the power recordings, they are just both recorded (to different fields). The garmin power will usually take preference in most apps that display power (power average, normalized power etc.), but all the information on your stryd power is there as long as you use the right datafield. As I have my own software to visualise and analyse my activities I don't care so much about what other apps say about my power, I just know to use the Stryd field. Luckily it is quite easy to distinguish the two, as Garmin Power is typically a lot higher (around 40% on a file I just checked), because they use a different definition of running power.

I can confirm that TrainingPeaks displays the Garmin Power if you have both in your fitfile. If you have only the Stryd connectIQ Power field present, then trainingpeaks will use this. So for you a solution may be the disabling of Running Power that you show in your screenshot. Note you need to do that for every type of activity where you use Stryd (e.g. for me it would be "Run", "Trail Run", "Track Run", "Hike")

Garmin Team and Stryd Team: Please put some resources into working together to create a solution to this current state! It should be possible for Stryd to be the provider of "native" running power, landing in the above mentioned "Power" field (not connectIQ Power). This should be up to the user to configure when pairing the stryd (In footpod settings there is "Use distance: Always, Use speed: Always", there could be "Use power: Always").

  • Please note, that you can't disable Garmin Running Power for Stryd Workout App. And for example, Strava is preferring Garmin power over Stryd power.

  • Yes I have this problem. I solved it by going to Garmin Run app settings, switching power to on but the switching the source to accessory only. Given you're getting HR from the watch, you won't then get power from the watch (since it's not an accessory). I am using Garmin's HRM, which is an accessory giving power, so I then needed a second step, which is connecting the HRM by bluetooth only (since Garmin collects power from accessories by ANT+).

But really the best solution would be for Garmin to allow the Stryd footpod to pair natively as the power source. Come on Garmin!
