FR 965 disconnecting from headphones/earbuds

I just bought a FR 965 and sadly the bluetooth connection with any earbuds/headphones seem to be really poor for me.

I've tried 3 different headphones/earbuds and I keep getting the same issue. Anywhere between intervals of 10 seconds to 30 minutes the bluetooth connection breaks up, most of the time the FR tries to auto reconnect which takes about 20-30 seconds and music resumes (sometimes it doesnt), after that its just a matter of time untill it disconnects again (on average I would say it last like 1-2 mins. I am using spotify on the FR .

Things I've tried so far

1. 3 different headphones/earbuds (all of them work perfectly fine without any issues when paired directly to my phone).

2. Unpaired and re-paired them multiple times

3. Restarted FR 965 multiple times

4. Restored FR to factory settings

5. Updated software on the FR 965

6. Tried wearing watch on my other wrist but problem still persist

7. Disabled all other bluetooth devices/wifi in the vicinity

Any advice that could help would be greatly appreciated.

This is very frustrating for a product I spent 650 euro on.

  • I have the exact same issue with my headphones =/ hopefully this is solved soon!

  • I had the same issue with AirPods and Shokz headphones. Garmin CS didn’t want to exchange the unit – they claimed it was an issue with the headphones – but I insisted on an exchange and the second watch works perfectly.

  • I use Shokz Aeropex and I have no issue with drops on connection.

The watch does behave oddly when the headphones have been connected to another device (such as my phone) since they were last connected to the 965 - they won't connect on first try and I always have to restart the connection after the initial try.  But this is not just the 965, it behaved this way with my 945 previously too.

  • Yes, sometimes it is disconnecting.
But I think that it's temporary, and that the watch itself isn't responsible. It's the 4.19 firmware version on it, that is. It's an incredible flawed one, and it will be replaced in one month or two.

  • Has there ever been a solution to this? I have exactly the same issue and it drives me mad.

  • I use the Jabra Elite 7 Active with the 965 and have no connection issues with them.

  • If you use some Sony model, check that in the application managing them (on your smartphone) the voice detection is set off.

I've found a setting that was putting automatically the headphones to silent in the case it detected I was speaking.

And when you are running, I might happens (I think) that your breath do enough noise to make it believe you're speaking.

I solved my issue that way.

  • Thanks, but no. I'm not using Sony, it only happens when running and I never have my phone with me. Connection just breaks.

  • I have exactly the same issue with my brand new FR965. It's very disapointing....
I've tested 3 different BT headphones from cheap to pro ones, and I had each time deconexion issues...
I just hope Garmin will solve this with an update...

  • I had same issues. Finally gave up waiting for a SW fix and contacted Garmin support. They provided more detailed instructions to solve known problems and after those failed gave me an RMA code to send the watch to service. After a week I received a new watch and BT has worked flawlessly with multiple different headsets (jabra and airpods) after that.
