Issues with Core and Stryd - data not displaying in Garmin Connect

I use two connect IQ data fields when I do running activities.  The CORE Body Temperature Monitor DataField and Stryd Zones | Data Field.  I noticed on my last run that the data on the two fields was displaying correctly on my watch during the activity.  After completion, the activity showed the data captured from each data field (and sensor) in the charts in GCM on my iPhone.  However, when I go to view the data on the web version of Garmin Connect, the charts for the data related to those data fields are missing.  However, for my cycling activities, when I only use the CORE data field, the chart for the data related to the CORE data field does show in the web version of Garmin Connect.

Looking at the fit file in Golden Cheetah, the data seem to be recorded just fine.

  • Hi

It sounds like you are using Display Option 32 on your Forerunner. If so then the behaviour you describe is expected. Due to memory limitations with certain Garmin watches, using Core and Stryd at the same time is not possible. The two sensors combined seek to write too much data into the FIT file and one of them crashes as a consequence. This would likely be the same if you used Stryd and any other sensor which writes non-natively supported metrics into the FIT file.

To overcome the problem, we introduced the display option. 32 stops the data field from writing the necessary data for the charts in Garmin Connect but writes the raw data which can then be viewed in 3rd party platforms such as Golden Cheetah. Garmin Connect actually requires different datasets for the charts. On the bike computer this is not an issue as no Stryd will be connected and you don't use display option 32.

We are looking for ways to bring the full functionality to customers and are in discussions with Garmin and Stryd. In the meantime, we felt giving limited functionality was preferable to none.

  • "Due to memory limitations with certain Garmin watches", is this including recently released watches such as the Forerunner 965?

It really seems like any "not ANT standard" third party sensor support is a dumpster fire, in theory Garmin watches could be very flexible and powerful with their ConnectIQ support, but at least for sensors there are all these issues and there is very little motivation on Garmins side to fix things, it seems to the external spectator.

This goes so far that the best running power-meter on the market (stryd) is actively locked out of being displayed as a Power source, even when running power is now added to the newer Garmin watches via wrist-based guestimation.

  • So the memory limitations are confined to older devices. In the Forerunner series, the 920 would be consider low memory and the the 935 would be considered medium memory. The Core/Stryd limitation comes down to the fact Garmin has a limit of 16 developer fields which can be written into FIT files. We understand this could be increased for impacted devices but requires Garmin to make the necessary changes. This has an impact on many of the newer watches, especially if people are using the latest iteration of the Stryd pod. This is why we have introduced options to limit metrics being written into the FIT file.

The ANT+ standard is CoreTemp but the data being collected by the sensor is not supported natively by Garmin devices. This is why CoreTemp needs the Connect IQ data field.

Running power as you state is different in that this is now supported natively by certain watches. However, we're not in a position to comment on the Garmin/Stryd interaction.

  • Thanks for the detailed and diplomatic answer :)

  • I am having similar, but different, issues with an Epix 2.  I can use both the Core and Stryd independently, but when trying to use together as data fields the Stryd gets knocked out and only shows as an icon

Not something I would have expected with such a new watch and new devices.  Is this the same issue and if so any update on a fix?

  • I have Epix 2 Pro and having the same issue with . Tried both and without 32 display option. Epix 2 Pro being the latest gen should be able to handle it just fine. It would be great if there was some guidance on how to get both working.

  • Same here with my Epix 2. Both datafields on two separate pages in Run, and Stryd just shows an icon.
