Bad Heart Rate tracking at Strength Training!

The pulse measurement during strength training is very bad at the moment. According to the clock, the pulse sometimes drops to 60 beats per minute, after finishing the exercise and does not detect any pulse peaks at all. Please @garmin Update the WHR (algorithm), I know it's better because I come from the 955 and here I was really satisfied with the pulse measurement during strength training!

Has anyone noticed anything similar?

  • Yes, though, sometimes it’s good sometimes bad. A chest strap would fix it, however, hr during strength training doesn’t tell us much.  I learned to live with the inaccuracy.   

  • I've tested the watch today on the strength vs my Venu 2 plus and does not seems to be a difference, it's to minimalistic to compare, the ideea is the watch needs improvement trough software, maybe some from garmin can help us reporting this

  • It happens on all watches, at least with me.  It’s not software so much as wrist position and the sensitivity of a particular wrist.  It’s a limitation of current OHR tech.

    Activities that flex the wrist may create an effect similar to wearing the watch too tightly and restrict blood flow. Examples include, but are not limited to:

    • Burpees

    • Gripping Handlebars on a Bicycle

    • Push-Ups

    • Racket Sports

    • Rowing

    • Weight Lifting

    • Yoga

    I know that strength training is a special challenge for the optical sensor. I don't expect a perfect measurement here either. However, I had the problem with my last session, that even after finishing my training set, the pulse did not rise according to the clock, but sometimes even decreased. So, I didn't have any movements in my wrist at the time.

    I had before as described, the 955 and here I was really satisfied with the measurement during strength training.

    I'll take a look at how it's going during my next training sessions.

    However, an accurate measurement (strength training) is even possible with the optical sensor, if you look at a certain competitor......

    I wonder how they can do it?

  • My guess is Garmin designed the elevate 4 sensor with a particular efficiency in mind but it turned out to be inadequate. That’s probably why they added 4 more LEDs to the elevate 5 sensor to address the issues.

    My Apple Watch 6 (same sensor as 7 & 8) has 2 LEDs for HR measurement but they seem to be able to go brighter than those on the 965.

    Another likely factor is the size and sitting of the watch on the wrist. The AW Ultra has a newer sensor with 4 LEDs instead of the 2 LEDs on the AW 6/7/8 but it actually has a lower real-world accuracy. So the odds are the heavier and larger Ultra sits worse on the wrist (bounces around more during activities) which equates to more inaccurate readings. I’ve also heard reviewers commenting that the 265S gives a more accurate reading than the 265 and 965 - most likely due to the same factor above.
