10 days of battery life with AOD, stock settings, no activities

Thought this might be of interest to some wondering about the 965's battery life.

After the London marathon I came down with the flu, so no running for a few weeks. I charged to 100% then used the watch normally, but zero activities. I have AOD on, sleep times from 11pm to 8am (default settings), default watch face but with weather, notifications set to calls only, basically everything else stock.

Got 10 days!

This pic was taken at 9.9 because I finally went out for a short run and didn't want to wait. Pretty happy overall!

  • And thank you to  for his very excellent battery widget. Support your devs!

  • I hugely sceptical even with your 'proof' is this is far higher than Garnin specs and a burn rate of 10% a day seems unlikely if it really was with AOD.

So I suspect either there is an error in the widget or your settings. Or you somehow have a magic 965..

  • Do you not see anywhere near these numbers?

I’m on my 3rd or 4th charge and the drain seems to have evened out (the first few charges I always find don’t last as long, both because you fiddle much more, and I guess it takes some time to calibrate)

FWIW brightness is set to the lowest setting. But still easily bright enough for me (even too bright when it’s pitch dark, but usually then ythe watch is in sleep mode and goes much dimmer and AOD off by default)

  • My settings are pretty stock. Watch face has acute load, steps, recovery time, weather, sunrise/set. Touch on, lowest brightness. Many widgets, but I no longer play too much

I think you’d get even more if you could make it disconnect from the phone during sleep (like I could with my Fenix 6).

I think 9-10 days is pretty much in line with many reviewers who are getting 5-6 days with upwards of 6 hrs GPS activities.

But yeah, I wasn’t expecting to get 10 days. I’ve found lots of variance relative to the specs with my past Garmins. Maybe I’ve just gotten one that is far on the “good” side.

  • Thanks! And happy to hear you like it ;)

  • With AOD I'm now at 52%, last charge was Monday 09:58. I had 2 shorter run's (40 and 35min) and a short bike track. No external sensor, no headphones. WLAN ist deactivated, but Bluetooth is always on. I even activated permanent AOD for activities and had the map open for one run.

  • For me I have the watch now for 8 days, and I only charged it once yesterday (after 7 days), it still claimed to have 2 more days in it, but I didn't want to risk going too low. Have my display set to always on for normal daily use, and did 6 runs in the 7 days. Easy to believe 10 days without any runs. I guess it will depend on your brightness settings, how much you scroll around in the watch itself vs just wearing it etc.

  • Charged last Thursday.

Did a 1:39 run on Friday and a 2:25 run today. Now 65% battery left.

No aod. Stock watchface. Used navigation. Mostly stock settings for screen and gps. Didn’t use my cheststrap for those runs. Always connected to my iPhone for notifications

Not super, but ok. I guess. My old forerunner 935 did better when it was new (but that was 6 years ago).

  • Yep, and notifications as well. I have mine set to calls only. If you’re getting a lot of notifications and that’s on, there’s probably a fair bit of battery going to buzzing.
